In a statement, Attorney General Al-Sediq al-Sour said Minister Mabrouka Othman would be imprisoned for four days before investigations into alleged business and financial fraud and counterfeiting. The accusations include forgery of official documents to conceal misuse and fraud of public funds, he said. According to the Transparency International Group’s Corruption Perceptions Index, in 2020 North Africa was ranked as one of the most corrupt of the 180 countries. After the 2011 NATO-backed uprising fell and the long-time ruler Muammar Gadafi was killed, oil-rich nations were in turmoil.
