That’s when the idea for her audacious debut “ Promising Young Woman,” out Friday, started to take shape. And her protagonist Cassie, played by Carey Mulligan, would be the scariest of all avengers: A real woman. Fennell knew Mulligan wouldn’t fight to make her nice. “I never for a moment felt like it was her first film,” Mulligan said.
