Over the next five years the railways plans to spend Rs1 lakh crore for development of stations. The money the railways plans to spend on passenger amenities this financial year — Rs 1838 crore — is a robust 114% more than the money spent in 2014-15 and a sizable 51% more than the money spent in the fiscal 2015-16. According to data made available by the railways, the money spent in 2014-15 was Rs 858 crore and the money spent in 2015-16 was Rs 1212 crore. The Pink Book allotted Rs 23 crore for passenger amenities to Western Railway's Mumbai division which extends from Churchgate to Surat. Officials agreed that for a long time, the railways' spend of passenger amenities was fairly negligible because of lack of adequate resources.
