Smalley knows well the pitfalls of falling into the slam stereotype. “People see (slam poetry) as beatniks going off about violence and war and being very serious, strong and unflinching, using Spoonerisms and other stupid literally devices to say very vapid things,” Smalley said. In that way, that allows me to break away from the typical ‘slam voice.’ Even in the slam community, we laugh at ourselves if we use, like, a vapid metaphor.”
