The justices turned away five appeals by the oil companies of lower court decisions that determined that the lawsuits belonged in state court, a venue often seen as more favorable to plaintiffs than federal court. Lawsuits against Big Oil have been piling up, with numerous cities and states suing for climate damages, in order to attempt to fund at least some solutions to the crisis, and/or to repair damages already caused. Those lawsuits have been held up by oil companies, determined to minimize damages while continuing to aggravate the crisis and greenwashing their climate “solutions”. The oil companies are clearly concerned that they will be held accountable in places like CA, HI and WA.
