The Juneteenth celebration starts at 11:30 a.m. with a short walk from Coe Memorial Park to City Hall, where Lindsey will be honored. Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day and Emancipation Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, according to CNN.com. The Mwandos said Lindsey was chosen as Juneteenth Mayor of the Day because of her contributions to the community. "She has committed a lot to the city of Torrington, and she's also part of the Cultural Affairs Commission in Torrington," Effenita Mwando said. The Mwandos want the whole city to celebrate Juneteenth.
