Three years ago, Smolla, an expert on defamation and libel law, was pulled on to Dominion Voting Systems’ legal team to craft a case against Fox News. This week, Fox settled with Dominion for $787.5 million, one of the largest settlements in a defamation case in U.S. history. “I’ve been a scholar that has written about defamation law for 40 years,” Smolla said. In 2022, Smolla came to what is now Vermont Law and Graduate School from a position as dean at the Delaware Law School that he had held since 2015. The settlement between Dominion and Fox is the largest publicly known media payout ever.
