The world would be a “better, more secure place” if America took over Greenland, Nigel Farage said at Davos, while insisting that he still believed in the sovereignty of nation states. “[I]f you believe in the nation state and not globalist structures, you believe in sovereignty,” he said. “So I think that’s really, really important.”Asked about the rise in popularity of Reform in the UK, Farage referred to the “moral decline” of Britain and said people were disenchanted with politics and wanted an alternative to the Conservatives and the Labour party. Positive polling ratings represented “a Britain that is in very serious decline, economic decline, social decline, even moral decline, in many ways, in knowing the difference between right and wrong. I really do.”

The office of Gavin Newsom, the California governor, said his appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos was canceled under pressure from the Trump administration. But before the talk was due to begin, his team says, the USA House bowed to political pressure from the Trump administration and denied the governor entry. In a statement, Fortune said: “Governor Newsom had been invited to participate in a Fortune conversation at USA House in Davos. Name-checking the California governor, Trump said in his remarks: “I know Gavin was here. Newsom has raised his profile mocking Trump excessively online – and his appearance in Davos did not go unnoticed by the administration.

Iran’s central bank appears to have been using vast quantities of a cryptocurrency championed by Nigel Farage, according to a new report. Farage added: “You know, stablecoins, crypto – this world is enormous, and I’ve been urging for years that London should embrace it. Suggestions that Harborne profits from Iran’s use of Tether stablecoins were “baseless drivel”, the lawyers said. Last year, Israel revealed what it said were dozens of crypto accounts used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. His post contained two crypto account numbers the businessman said were used by Iran’s central bank.

Roy Morgan has published a weekly result for the second week in a row, perhaps suggesting a return to old form after its post-election practice of combining its regular surveying into large-sample monthly results. Labor leads 53.5-46.5 on respondent allocated preferences and 53-47 when preference flows from the last election are applied, in both cases out from 52-48 last week. The Daily Mail reports a Freshwater Strategy poll of 1050 respondents has Labor on 33% of the primary vote, the Coalition on 28%, the Greens on 11% and One Nation on 19%, with Labor leading 53-47 on two-party preferred. “About 75%” supported “a temporary cap on migration while housing and infrastructure catches up, while 81% backed stricter character tests and background checks for visa applicants”. We may see full details of the poll reported on the company’s site at a later time.

Trump surmised: Yes, we might have our internal squabbles, but I am bringing tough love because we are all in this together. I mean, we’re taking people from Somalia, and Somalia is a failed – it’s not a nation. Elon Musk, a white man born in apartheid in South Africa and now the richest person in the world, has amplified such ideas. His feed on X, the social media platform that he owns, is still replete with dire warnings of white civilisation under siege. The message: I am still the great white hope.

Donald Trump has walked back his threat to impose sweeping US tariffs on eight European countries, claiming he had agreed “the framework of a future deal” on Greenland. After what he called a “very productive” meeting with the Nato secretary general, Mark Rutte, on Wednesday, Trump claimed he had formed “the framework” of a deal over Greenland, without providing more information. I think it’s going to be a very good deal for the United States, also for them,” Trump told CNBC, the financial news network. Wall Street suffered its worst day since October on Tuesday, the first day it traded after Trump’s threat to attack Nato allies with tariffs over Greenland. In his speech at Davos, Trump said the US would not use military force to take Greenland but demanded “immediate negotiations”.

Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said on Wednesday that he had agreed to join a US-backed “board of peace” proposed by Donald Trump, despite his office having earlier criticised the composition of its executive committee. Netanyahu’s office had previously objected to the makeup of the board’s executive committee, which includes Turkey, a regional rival of Israel. The charter’s board says the committee must have “the courage to depart from approaches and institutions that have too often failed”. Under the draft charter, membership of the board would be restricted to states invited by the chair. The chair would also be granted sweeping powers, including the authority to remove member states – subject to a two-thirds veto by the board – and to appoint a successor in the event of their own departure.
