In a post on Truth Social, Donald Trump has described the UK’s plans to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius as “an act of great stupidity”. They are an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, located about 5,800 miles south-east of the UK and 1,250 miles north-east of Mauritius. The deal then was that the islands would return to Mauritius once they were no longer needed for Britain’s defence. A joint UK-US military base was built on the largest of the islands, Diego Garcia. Mauritius takes sovereignty of the islands but the UK maintains an initial 99-year lease of Diego Garcia with an option of extension.

“To speak figuratively in simpler words, he was like a goat yoked to pull an ox cart. North Korea’s economy suffered major setbacks during the Covid-19 pandemic. The party congress is likely to open later in January or February, according to South Korea’s spy service. During the congress, Kim was expected to strengthen a policy of cooperation with Russia, China and other allies to bring out gradual economic developments, Kwak said. Moon said Kim would probably use the congress to formally declare his stated goal of simultaneously advancing nuclear and conventional weapons programs.

One year into the second Trump administration, an actual US foreign policy remains just a nice idea. View image in fullscreen María Corina Machado presents Donald Trump with her Nobel peace prize medal. And there isn’t that much time.”Trump had a busy year in foreign policy in 2025, capped in January this year by the capture and rendition of the Venezuelan strongman, Nicolás Maduro in a legally dubious raid that Trump presents as a signature foreign policy victory. The only US foreign policy now is one of might makes right, and Trump and his allies have made clear that in their worldview geopolitics is a zero-sum game. In Trump’s new world order, all agreements and alliances can find themselves hostage to the whims of the moment.

The UK should consider expelling the US from British military bases, the leader of the Green party has said, as he advocated leaving Nato and spending less on American weapons as part of a wider dismantling of the two countries’ defence alliance. “But then we can talk about Donald Trump’s complicity or active enabling of [Benjamin] Netanyahu and the genocide in Gaza. “Donald Trump has so much domination within Nato that I don’t believe it’s possible to reform Nato from within,” he said. “We need to make sure that the people we are reliant on are reliable allies, and Donald Trump is certainly not that,” he said. But the point is, if you allow people to hoard assets, that removes other assets for other people.”

Chinese tourism to Japan almost halved in December amid a bitter diplomatic row between Beijing and Tokyo over the security of Taiwan. Chinese tourism started falling towards the end of last year after Japan’s prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, suggested her country could become militarily involved if China attempted to invade Taiwan. Chinese tourists to Japan spent a combined $3.7bn in the third quarter of last year. Each Chinese tourist spent on average 22% more than other visitors last year, according to the Japan National Tourism Organisation. “While the number of Chinese tourists in December decreased, we attracted a sufficient number of people from many other countries and regions to offset that,” he said.

Penguins in Antarctica have radically shifted their breeding season, apparently as a response to climate change, research has found. “We are very concerned because these penguins are advancing their season so much, and penguins are now breeding earlier than in any known records,” said the report’s lead author, Dr Ignacio Juarez Martínez. “The changes are happening so fast that the penguins could end up breeding at times when their prey is not available yet. This represents the fastest change in phenology (timing of breeding) recorded in any bird, and possibly any vertebrate, to date. Such drastic changes also threaten to increase competition between the region’s penguin species, with clear “winners” and “losers” expected.
