Storm Floris to hit Cumbria with 'severe' winds next week
Storm Floris is expected to bring potentially strong winds from 6am on Monday until 6am Tuesday. The storm could bring wind gusts of 40-50mph across inland areas with coastal and high ground areas possibly experiencing gusts up to 70mph. Residents have been warned to brace for potential disruptions and damage. Travel disruptions are a possibility, with road potential closures and interruptions to rail, air, and ferry services because of the storm. In the 2024/2025 Storm Naming season, Storm Floris is the sixth named storm.

Country music singer Jeannie Seely dies aged 85
Known as Miss Country Soul for her unique vocal style, Seely was a trailblazer for women in country music, celebrated for her spirited nonconformity and for a string of undeniable hits in the 1960s and 1970s. “The unsinkable Seely is working her way back.”Dolly Parton was one of several country music luminaries paying her tribute on Friday, saying she met Seely when they were both young and starting out in Nashville. UK's online safety law is putting free speech at risk, X says
Britain's online safety law risks suppressing free speech due to its heavy-handed enforcement, social media site X said on Friday, adding that significant changes were needed. "When lawmakers approved these measures, they made a conscientious decision to increase censorship in the name of 'online safety'," it said in a statement. A UK government spokesperson said it is "demonstrably false" that the Online Safety Act compromises free speech. "As well as legal duties to keep children safe, the very same law places clear and unequivocal duties on platforms to protect freedom of expression," the spokesperson said. Ofcom said on Thursday it had launched investigations into the compliance of four companies, which collectively run 34 pornography sites.

Barclays becomes second UK bank to quit industry’s net zero group
The lender announced it would be leaving the Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA) on Friday after “the departure of most of the global banks”. HSBC became the first British institution to leave the alliance earlier this month in the wake of several major US banks. Campaigners called Barclays’ decision to step away “incredibly disappointing” as it marks a fresh blow to international efforts to co-ordinate climate action. In a statement published online on Friday, Barclays said: “After consideration, we have decided to withdraw from the Net Zero Banking Alliance. “It is supporting its members to lead on climate by addressing the barriers preventing their clients from investing in the net-zero transition.

MEA slams UK parliament report on transnational repression as ‘baseless’
The deliberate reliance on discredited sources calls into question the credibility of the report itself.”The report, titled “Transnational Repression in the UK”, was published on Wednesday by the Joint Human Rights Committee, made up of MPs and peers, which consider matters relating to human rights in the UK. Its members include Indian-origin peer Lord Dholakia.Page 6 states: “Our inquiry received evidence alleging that many states had conducted TNR (transnational repression) activities on UK soil. Multiple evidence submissions accused Bahrain, China, Egypt, Eritrea, India, Iran, Pakistan, Russia, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and UAE of perpetrating TNR in the UK. "China, Russia and Iran were highlighted as the “three most flagrant TNR perpetrators in the UK”.Written evidence submitted to the committee was also published. It merely records that evidence was given by a group that has long been hostile to India.

Newman to be a Doctor of the Church, Pope Leo XIV announces
ST JOHN HENRY NEWMAN is to be declared a Doctor of the Church, the Pope has announced, in an acknowledgement of the significance of Newman’s teaching. After his secession in 1845, he joined the Birmingham Oratory and was later created a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII. There have long been calls for Newman to be made a Doctor of the Church. At the time of his canonisation, the RC Archbishop of Sydney, the most Revd Anthony Fisher, said that the honour should be bestowed (News, 18 October 2019). Newman is the 38th Doctor of the Church recognised by the Vatican, and the third of them to be associated with England, after the Venerable Bede and St Anselm of Canterbury.
