That was the top line from a briefing to reporters by representatives from Emily’s List, the fundraising juggernaut that backs Democratic women candidates who support abortion rights. She also said this election, women candidates who were not previously politically active have “entered the political ring arena because of the issue of abortion rights”. But what makes the issue so potent, she said, is how many voters, perhaps a decisive share of voters, view it. “We are going through the collapse of 40 years of Republican branding around the phrase ‘pro-life,’”that official said. “Voters hear that now, and they assume that a ‘pro-life’ politician is for an abortion ban with no exceptions.”

Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham were riding high after hammering Manchester United last weekend but have been bought back down to earth with a poor loss at BrightonJamie Carragher reminded Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham that "seven days is a long time in football" after they were given a reality check at Brighton. Plaudits flew in after they dismantled Erik ten Hag's troubled side to win 3-0 with a performance that perhaps deserved more goals. Seven days on though and Tottenham showed all that was wrong with them. They breezed into a 2-0 lead at Tottenham with the prolific Brennan Johnson scoring for a sixth straight game. We kind of accepted our fate and it's hard to understand as we've not done that while I've been here.

Israelis on 7 October marked the first anniversary of the Hamas attack that triggered a war which has sparked protest worldwide and risks igniting a far wider conflict in the Middle East. Families of hostages still held in Gaza – about 100, a third of whom are said to be dead – gathered near prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Jerusalem residence and stood during a two-minute siren, replicating a custom from Holocaust Remembrance and Memorial Day. The Hamas attacks that day killed 1,200 people and more than 250 were taken hostage, according to Israeli figures. The following Israeli offensive in Gaza laid waste to the densely populated coastal territory and killed almost 42,000 people, according to Palestinian health authorities

It has reached a new bottom such that the venerable New York Times has come under a barrage of fire over its tendency to “sanewash” Trump appearances. The Times writes of Trump making reference to the audience at his dreadful debate with Kamala Harris. In fact, it happens so often these days that it no longer even generates much attention.”True – and it especially doesn’t generate a lot of attention in The New York Times. But it most certainly does matter if Trump takes office again. This is especially true if he’s losing some discipline due to diminished capacity.
