Despite being handed his senior debut by Jose Mourinho at just 16, Gomes needed a harsh reality check to reach his potential. However, Mourinho soon expressed his disappointment with Gomes' performance in a reserve match, leaving the youngster feeling humiliated in front of his team-mates. Solskjaer suggested a loan move, but Gomes felt there was no clear plan for his development at his boyhood club. They wanted me to go on loan but there wasn't really much in place. Gomes felt that after spending his entire life in United's academy, there should have been a clearer plan for his progression.

Write to letters@thetimes.co.ukSir, By the logic of your leading article (“Unintended Consequences”, Oct 5), we must also examine the unintended consequences of keeping the blanket ban on assisted dying. Our present law fails to protect terminally ill people from agony that even the best palliative care cannot prevent. It fails to prevent dying people from taking their own lives. To reject change on assisted dying is to accept that we are satisfied with this status quo. This debate is not only about whether to legalise assisted dying.

A TEENAGER died after six doctors "failed to spot her tumours" seven times - instead insisting she was just "under the weather". The same dismissive response was delivered by six different doctors on seven occasions. I googled Ruby’s symptoms and read about lung cancer cases where a tumour pressing on a vein in the chest can cause swelling. "So even when a child presents with cancer symptoms, they may not think it’s likely to be the disease." She was only diagnosed with advanced adenocarcinoma after she visited a private doctor and died three weeks later.

Read our privacy policyJournalist Tim Shipman has said that despite Boris Johnson’s ebullient persona, the former prime minister is actually a “loner” who “hates parties”. No Way Out is the last of Shipman’s four-book series chronicling key moments in British political history. The final instalment focuses on Boris Johnson’s role in the Brexit saga, which many blame for dividing the nation. “Boris Johnson hates parties,” Shipman said. “But when tested and in the moment of maximum kind of crisis, Churchill came through and ultimately Johnson kind of didn’t.”No Way Out: Brexit: From the Backstop to Boris is out now.

Is there a liquid wetter than water? Readers replyThe word wet comes from the Old English wæt and is ultimately related to the word water. Consequently, I would say beer is wetter than water – and the more beer you drink, the wetter it becomes. Cohesive forces, such as hydrogen bonds, hold water molecules to each other and create a surface tension. With strong cohesive forces, water tends to stay as spherical droplets to minimise contact with a surface.
