The Arizona Cardinals faced criticism on social media on Monday as it wished its followers a happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day as others celebrated Columbus Day. Katie Hobbs said last year she would support a bill to rename the holiday Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Tempe and Phoenix are two of the cities in Arizona that established Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a paid holiday, according to KOLD-TV. "Recognizing and celebrating Indigenous peoples’ resilience, strength and contributions," the Cardinals, who play in Glendale, wrote on X. President Biden became the first president in 2021 to formally recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the same holiday.

While it’s still unclear just how strong La Niña will get, current forecasts favor a weaker one. That outlook could be change when the center releases its latest forecast on Thursday based on trends toward a weaker La Niña. No two La Niña winters are the same, but many have temperature and precipitation trends in common. This is due to the behavior of the jet stream — essentially a river of air that storms flow through — which often shifts north during a La Niña winter. Northern California is typically wetter during a La Niña winter, but the Climate Prediction Center’s forecast keeps the region near normal this season.

Dr. Richard Haass discusses the obligations he outlines in his New York Times Bestseller, "The Bill of Obligations." Skyler Stark-Ragsdale/The Aspen TimesDr. Richard Haass discussed his new book, “The Bill of Obligations – The Ten Habits of Good Citizens,” Monday at the Colorado Mountain College Aspen Campus. In the book, Haass, who served as president of the Council on Foreign Relations from 2003 to 2023, outlines 10 obligations citizens should abide by to accompany the rights listed in the US constitution. Along with knowing their rights, citizens should analyze their own responsibilities as members of a society. For example, a citizen’s right to bear arms comes into conflict with another’s right to personal safety, a citizen’s right not to wear a mask comes into conflict with another’s right to public health, he said.

Active ETFs are the latest attempt to differentiate, and they seem to be taking investors full circle. Fees, which average 0.31% for active ETFs and 0.07% for their passive counterparts, add to the performance drag. The former are liquid, tax-efficient—at least in many jurisdictions—and cheap, with active ETF fees still roughly half those on active mutual funds. It has become the world’s largest active ETF thanks to the recent craze for option-related strategies. Investors who feel tempted to venture out of passive ETFs should make sure they are following their own interests and not those of the investment industry.

No one really knows how significant of a role social media plays in youths’ emotional state. It doesn’t help that mental health is influenced by many factors, and no single treatment works for every person. said Megan Moreno, a scientist and pediatrician at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and co-director of the Center of Excellence on Social Media and Youth Mental Health at the American Academy of Pediatrics. Recent legislation takes aim at Big Tech, seeking to protect children’s mental health by limiting access to social media. Randomized, controlled studies on whether social media caused the mental-health crisis are impractical because exposure to social media is now everywhere, researchers say.

A recent opinion essay gathered first-hand testimonies from 65 U.S.-based health professionals who worked in Gaza over the past year, who shared more than 160 photographs and videos with Times Opinion to corroborate their detailed accounts of treating preteen children who were shot in the head or chest. Following publication, some readers questioned the accuracy of the accounts and the authenticity of three CT images shown. Times Opinion rigorously edited this guest essay before publication, verifying the accounts and imagery through supporting photographic and video evidence and file metadata. When questions arose about the veracity of images included in the essay, we did additional work to review our previous findings. We presented the scans to a new round of multiple, independent experts in gunshot wounds, radiology and pediatric trauma, who attested to the images’ credibility.
