Half of my house’s doors had lead paint, buried underneath a layer of safe paint, but it still exposed the kids to lead dust. My kids’ lead symptoms began before they began crawling, and their doctors think it’s because they were exposed to construction in my neighborhood. It took months to schedule a professional lead test to ascertain all the lead hazards in our house. I’m furious that I didn’t know lead poisoning was something that could happen in 2025, not just pre-1978. In many ways, it mimics ADHD and autismso perfectly that kids with lead poisoning are often misdiagnosed.

LOADING ERROR LOADINGSen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) won’t deny the fact that President Donald Trump knows how to play his cards right when it comes to getting what he wants in Washington, D.C. But in the end, he said, nothing can mask the reality of the broken health care system Democrats are fighting to fix. Advertisement“It is clear that this shutdown has got to end as soon as possible,” Sanders said. “You want to throw 15 million people off the health care that they have?” he said. “You‘re going to destroy a broken health care system.

Advertisement“What were those questions?” O’Donnell asked. “Exactly which questions did Donald Trump refuse to answer? We have no idea what the other questions were.”Advertisement“Maxwell has only one hope left of getting out of prison, her old friend Donald Trump,” O’Donnell said. I’d never been surrounded by so many queer people my age, much less laughing at a classic queer film together. I’d made queer friends, but this was my first time setting foot in a queer space. While never officially labeled “the queer fraternity,” its history naturally drew people from diverse backgrounds — including queer and gender-nonconforming students — who became the majority of the community over time. As the only “out” Korean queer person on campus, gossip plagued me. This is the little-discussed “dark side” of teaching where you get “compensated emotionally instead of financially,” Perkins said. At one point, Perkins “was teaching four different classes, which meant four different individual things to prepare for. Life: The Funniest Posts From Women This Week (Sept. 27-Oct. 3)As she approached 30, Perkins recognized something had to give. “I really thought that Costco was going to be just like my ‘good enough for now’ job,” Perkins said. At Costco, she got to take whole lunch breaks and leave her work at work.

I’d used a stencil to neatly write his name and the year on the outside of the cone, but the marker bled. The result was that it looked kind of like the graffiti we see every day as we pass remnants of the Berlin Wall. I worried that my ineptitude with life in Germany would mean my kids would be perpetual outsiders, too. I watch German TV and listen to German podcasts to absorb the small cultural things that aren’t taught in textbooks. Advertisement AdvertisementAdvertisement AdvertisementI won’t ever catch up with my kids’ cultural knowledge of Germany, and I still worry that my kids will pay a price for the things I don’t know.

LOADING ERROR LOADINGA labor union and public-interest legal groups sued the Trump administration on Friday for inserting partisan language into federal employees’ out-of-office replies during the government shutdown. Workers did not consent to having their replies changed to the new partisan language, which was first reported by NBC News. Many felt they were being used to violate the Hatch Act, which limits political activities by federal employees. ″[The administration has] no legitimate interest in forcing Department employees to recite partisan words that they would not have spoken otherwise,” the lawsuit states. The administration also posted partisan messages on official government websites and took advantage of a national newsletter for veterans to say the shutdown was all Democrats’ fault.

So, what is democracy and why isn’t the U.S. one at the moment? As far as I can tell, there are three basic characteristics that a true democratic system is going to have. Democracy isn’t just a suggestion box. It’s a vision of democracy that also connects that part of the Democratic Party to the Left. One thing I’ve thought a lot about is the extent to which democracy, one of the background ideas of democracy, might be that connective tissue.
