Construction starts on Vietnam-China smart border gate project

At Huu Nghi international border gate (Photo: VNA)– Permanent Vice Chairman of Lang Son province Duong Xuan Huyen on September 15 attended a ceremony to start work on Huu Nghi (Vietnam) – Youyi Guan (China) smart border gate project, organised by the People’s Government of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Implementing a framework agreement on promoting the pilot construction of Vietnam - China smart border gates, Lang Son province and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have agreed to pilot the building of a smart border gate at the specialised route for transporting goods at Huu Nghi – Youyi Guan border gate.The project will be implemented by the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region based on satellite positioning and 5G technology. It uses automated guided vehicles (AGVs), automated crane equipment, and a smart map checking system. It can also complete cross-border logistics information exchange between Vietnam and China, allowing automatic customs clearance of goods around the clock.Xu Yongke, Vice Chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, said that once operational, the border gate will bring customs clearance activities between the two sides to a new level with “no closing” and “no waiting”, and help improve the efficiency of these activities.Leaders of the two sides agreed to maintain regular, close and effective cooperation to soon finish the project, so as to promote economic and trade ties between Vietnam and China./.

Vietnam to start completely turning off 2G service from December

– Vietnam is planning to start completely switching off the 2G network from December 2023 to make room for more modern telecommunication technologies to develop.The 2G mobile network, first used in Vietnam in 1993, has become outdated and no longer able to meet users’ demand or keep up with the growth of telecoms services Given this, the Authority of Telecommunications under the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC), is planning to completely switch off the 2G network.Director of the authority Nguyen Thanh Phuc said his agency has held meetings with telecoms service providers in Vietnam, and they pledged to start locking 2G-only devices from December 2023.According to its document issued on September 27, 2022, the MIC has moved to disable the 2G network nationwide. Service providers have also designed technical solutions to eliminate 2G and 3G-only devices.The complete switch-off is aimed at optimising the frequency reserves to develop more modern telecommunication technologies , including 4G.The MIC has provided guidance to telecoms service providers in building roadmaps and plans for turning off 2G service and helping users switch to 4G and 5G networks. It targets that the number of 2G mobile subscriptions will decline to about 6 million, or less than 5% of the total, by the end of 2023 and this network will be completely shut down in 2024.Data of service providers show that there were more than 26 million 2G mobile subscriptions, equivalent to 20% of the 126 mobile subscriptions nationwide, at the start of 2023. It fell to about 23 million as of August.The switch-off of 2G service has been carried out in many countries such as Japan (2011), Singapore (2017), and China (2021).As of October 2022, 142 telecoms service providers in 56 countries and territories made plans to shut down 2G and 3G networks, and 51 of them turned off 2G service, according to the Global Mobile Suppliers Association./.

“Make in Vietnam” innovative products introduced to global young parliamentarians

(Photo: VNA)Participants at the exhibition (Photo: VNA)An exhibition themed “Khat vong Viet Nam” ( Aspirations of Vietnam ) kicked off at the National Convention Centre in Hanoi on September 14 as part of activities in the framework of the 9th Global Conference for Young Parliamentarians (GCYP).Jointly hosted by the National Assembly and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCYU) Central Committee, this is an important event to introduce and promote innovative and creative products imbued with Vietnamese cultural identity and traditions, and scientific and technological achievements in Vietnam's digital transformation process.In his opening speech, Chairman of the National Assembly's Committee for External Relations Vu Hai Ha emphasised that from a backward agricultural country suffering from severe consequences of wars, Vietnam has made strong development steps since implementing the Doi Moi (renewal) policy.Vietnam completed millennium development goals (MDGs) ahead of schedule and the country is actively implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, he said, adding that sustainable development goals (SDGs) have been included in and concretised in Vietnam's socio-economic development programmes and strategies.In the context of complicated developments in the world and the risk of not realising SDGs in line with the set roadmap, digital transformation and innovation are the opportunity for countries, especially those at lower levels of development, Ha stated, noting that that the Vietnamese Party and State have issued many policies to promote innovation and digital transformation.Through the exhibition, Vietnam wants to introduce its achievements in the field to international friends, thus inspiring international delegates and young global parliamentarians in upcoming debates on measures and policies, especially the role of parliamentarians, in perfecting the legal framework for promoting the implementation of SDGs through digital transformation and innovation, Ha went on.On display are many "Make in Vietnam" products, which have earned recognition in the world, including unmanned aircraft using AI technology developed by CT Group, or 5G network equipment provided by Viettel Group.Notably, a multilingual platform - Vietnam.vn - introducing Vietnam in seven languages developed by the Ministry of Information and Communications attracted attention of visitors.The exhibition is expected to serve as an useful bridge for young parliamentarians to share experiences on digital transformation, flexible adaptation solutions after the COVID-19 pandemic and market fluctuations./.

Automobile sales down 9% in August

Illustrative image (Photo: Toyota Vietnam)- Members of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) sold 22,540 vehicles in August, down 9% compared to the previous month, VAMA has reported.Of the vehicles sold last month, there were 17,335 passenger cars, down 10%; 5,036 commercial vehicles, down 5%; and 169 special-use vehicles , up 14% month-on-month.This indicates that the automotive market in Vietnam has faced difficulties in maintaining stable sales, especially in the two key segments of passenger cars and commercial vehicles.In terms of vehicle origin, the sales of domestically-assembled and imported completely built-up (CBU) vehicles reached 13,118 units and 9,422 units, down 3% and 15% month-on-month, respectively.In the first eight months of this year, VAMA members sold a total of 184,554 vehicles of all kinds, down 30% annually, with the sales of passenger cars, commercial and special-use vehicles dropping by 34%, 13%, and 61%, respectively.Besides VAMA member units, the Vietnamese auto market also includes other automakers such as Audi, Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Subaru, Volkswagen, and Volvo, but they do not disclose business results.Meanwhile, Thanh Cong Group (TC Group) announced its sales of 3,145 units in August, and 35,191 in the Jan – August period.Based on the sales reports from VAMA and TC Group, 25,685 units were sold in August, lifting the total sales in the first eight months to 219,745 units.Toyota led the market in August with 3,922 units, up 16.7% from the previous month. It was followed by KIA, Huyndai, Mazda and Ford./.
