Austrian firms seek opportunities in Vietnam
It quoted Eibinger-Miedl as saying that there are ample opportunities for Austrian firms to invest in Vietnam in energy technology and environment, design and construction, as well as green technologies. He quoted experts as saying that that Vietnam's economy could grow by 7% annually and Austrian businesses want to seek opportunities there. So far, a number of Austrian firms are doing well in Vietnam, namely equipment manufacturer Andritz, power train system developer EVL List, steel maker Voestalpine, among others. During a seminar recently held by WKO in Vienna, WKO Regional Manager for Asia Christina-Maria Schösser hailed Vietnam as a rapid and stable growing economy that boasts favourable conditions for Austrian firms. Over the past years, Vietnam has become the third biggest importer of Austria in Asia and a promising market for Austrian projects, she said./.

Food Bank Vietnam promotes technology application for food sharingThe non-profit Food Bank Vietnam on October 15 launched a programme called Food Share to promote food sharing and stop wastage. It would promote the use of technology in sharing food and help prevent food waste, Nguyen Tuan Khoi, chairman of Food Bank Vietnam, said. Food Bank Vietnam, a member of the Global Food Bank Network, has delivered 11.6 million kg of food and supported 3.5 million people since 2018. The event was also attended by representatives of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs, and the embassies of Vietnam in 15 European countries. Vietnam received 1.87 million foreign visitors in the Jan. – Sept. period and it aims to attract five million foreign travelers this year.

Customs authority urges use of rail transport for farm produce export
Illustrative image (Photo: VNA)VNA– The General Department of Vietnam Customs has asked relevant parties to boost the exportation of agricultural products by rail, especially across the northern border, in response to overloaded land transport and soaring costs.The Ministry of Finance said the international imposition of strict anti-COVID-19 measures since the beginning of 2020 has affected global supply chains, leading to sea and land transportation congestion and rising expenses.In particular, China’s “zero-COVID” policy with stringent anti-pandemic measures has hampered the flows of goods, vehicles, and people across the northern border. Thousands of vehicles carrying export commodities encountered jams in border areas of both countries, which has caused considerable losses to enterprises.Facing that fact, the Government, ministries, and sectors have been taking various measures to facilitate trade and customs clearance, particularly for farm produce, but difficulties have yet to be thoroughly addressed.Meanwhile, railway transportation is relatively smooth, cost effective, and the pandemic has not impacted rail as much. Therefore, many businesses are switching to this type of transport for trading activities, according to Vietnam Customs.Given enterprises’ demand and proposal, the general department has called for increasing exportation of farm produce by rail, which it said is also a policy and direction of the Government.Earlier, the Government had instructed the Ministry of Transport to coordinate with other ministries, agencies, and localities to make plans to improve the capacity of international rail freight transport to serve export and import.Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh ordered ministries, agencies, and localities to work to optimise other means of transport such as sea and rail transport to deal with congestion at northern border gates.Implementing those directions, the Finance Ministry requested increasing investment in railway infrastructure to meet freight transportation demand./.

(Photo:VNA)The Thai government plans to spend at least 23 billion THB (about 610 million USD) to help those affected by recent flooding.According to deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek, at a cabinet meeting this week, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha ordered all related agencies to speed up efforts to take care of victims of ongoing floods around the country.PM Prayut affirmed that the government has prepared a flood relief budget initially estimated at 23 billion THB, which will be taken from the central budget for fiscal 2023.He said overall spending on a flood relief budget could not be determined until details of flood damage are supplied by all related agencies.Heavy seasonal rains again pounded much of Thailand on October 9, causing continued widespread flooding, particularly in the northeast.The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that in the northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani, almost 20,000 people have been moved into 85 temporary shelters as floodwaters overwhelmed more than 1,000 villages. The provincial Chamber of Commerce estimated 5 billion THB (131 million USD) of economic damage from the flooding./.

Vietnam’s exports to CPTPP countries up 38.7% in January- August period
Illustrative image (Source: VGP)Vietnam's export value to Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) member countries increased by 38.7% to 41 billion USD over the first eight months of 2022, the Government's report shows.The Southeast Asian nation spent 35 billion USD on imports from CPTPP nations, the VGP cited the report released by the Government on the implementation of the CPTPP, during the January-August period.With the above figures, Vietnam enjoyed a trade surplus of 6 billion USD.Remarkably, Vietnam's exports to Canada and Mexico grew by 32% and 9.2% to 4.5 billion USD and 3.2 billion USD, respectively. CPTPP , a new-generation trade pact, was signed by 11 countries, namely Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam in Santiago, Chile on March 8, 2018.Eight months later, Vietnam ratified the trade deal that took effect on January 14, 2019./.

East Asian nations commit to dealing with plastic pollution at sea
Cleaning up a beach in the Philippines. Accordingly, member states agreed to take urgent actions and seek effective solutions to deal with plastic pollution and challenges to marine and coastal ecological systems at present and in the future. The event also afforded Vietnam a chance to make active contributions to regional and global initiatives on marine plastic waste, the blue marine economy, marine and coastal spatial planning, and marine protected areas. During the two-day meeting, delegates heard a report on COBSEA’s activities, adopted an action plan on marine waste, established the EAS Regional Node within the framework of the global partnership on marine waste, and updated negotiations on achieving international legally binding tools to end plastic pollution.
