PM meets Cần Thơ voters ahead of parliament’s seventh session
CẦN THƠ — Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính and National Assembly (NA) deputies of Cần Thơ had a meeting with voters in Ô Môn District of the Mekong Delta city on May 12, ahead of the 15th NA’s seventh session. At the event, participants were informed about the agenda of the parliament’s coming session and listened to a report on the performance of the Cần Thơ NA deputies’ delegation during the first four months of 2024. Pointing out certain shortcomings, difficulties, challenges, causes and lessons, he highlighted the focal tasks and solutions on socio-economic development the Government will carry out in the time ahead. It also needs to comprehensively and effectively carry out the master plans of the Mekong Delta and Cần Thơ. He voiced his hope that local voters will also exert efforts to contribute to the development and prosperity of Cần Thơ and the whole nation.

Market to trade sideways nearly 1,250 point-level this week: experts
The VN-Index on the Hồ Chí Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE) closed last week at 1,244.7 points and the HNX-Index on the Hà Nội Stock Exchange (HNX) was last traded at 235.68 points. However, the following sessions saw a slowdown in the upward momentum, with the market trading sideways around the 1,240 - 1,250 range. Under the +/-5 per cent margin, banks are implementing a ceiling exchange rate of VNĐ25,484 per dollar and a floor exchange rate of VNĐ23,057 per dollar. Historical data showed that whenever the exchange rate rises by more than 2 per cent, the stock market tends to undergo corrections. If the VN-Index surpasses 1,255 points, investors should be cautious of a strong resistance zone at 1,275 - 1,280 points.

Most human rights recommendations acceptable to Việt Nam, some need further consideration: Official
The third message was that with its consistent policy on protecting and promoting human rights, Việt Nam has very seriously implemented the UPR recommendations that it accepted in the previous cycle and achieved numerous positive results, especially in perfecting the legal system and ensuring human rights in practice, thus bringing very practical results to its people. Assessing 320 recommendations that Việt Nam received from 133 countries during the dialogue, the official stated that most of them have positive contents and Việt Nam can accept them. But some need to be considered further in terms of compatibility with Việt Nam's laws, policies, resources and enforcement capabilities. As for the recommendations which are not really appropriate and based on inaccurate information about ensuring freedom of speech, press and assembly, Việt Nam will continue to hold dialogue and provide information to those countries so that they better understand the actual situation in Việt Nam, he said. Việt Nam will carefully study the recommendations and announce the country’s stance on them before the 57th session of the UNHRC.

Key economic pillars show positive growth
HÀ NỘI - Việt Nam's economy has gone through one-third of the 2024 yearly plan and achieved some remarkable results, showing clear recovery momentum through the growth of important pillars. According to the General Statistics Office (GSO), industrial production continues its positive growth pace. Retail sales and services revenue totalled VNĐ2.06 quadrillion ($81.06 billion), up 8.5 per cent year-on-year. Of the total, the export turnover hit $123.6 billion, up 15 per cent year-on-year. The increase in the VNĐ/US$ exchange rate creates inflationary pressure and can inhibit economic growth.

Việt Nam's National Report under UNHRC’s fourth cycle adopted by UPR working group
GENEVA — The United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group adopted Việt Nam’s National Report under UNHRC’s fourth cycle on May 10. The working group’s report acknowledged Việt Nam’s national report, content of the dialogue on May 7 and 320 recommendations made by 133 countries. Addressing the approval session, Việt Nam’s Deputy Foreign Minister Đỗ Hùng Việt reinstated the importance of the UPR mechanism, saying that the implementation of UPR recommendations throughout the review cycles supports Việt Nam’s efforts to promote and protect human rights. He affirmed that Việt Nam will carefully study the recommendations and announce the country’s stance on them before the 57th session of the UNHRC. During the 57th session, the UNHRC is expected to officially approve a report on the results of the UPR review for Việt Nam.

Environmental audit to be effective management tool in Việt Nam
HÀ NỘI — An environmental audit is well established in countries with modern industries, but is very new to developing countries including Việt Nam. Along with traditional management tools, an environmental audit is an effective way of providing information to State management agencies on the field and to restore the environmental inspection and supervision. The World Bank believes that environmental audit is an inspection of an organisation, facility or location to determine how the organisation or facility meets environmental management criteria. Therefore, in some cases, any environmental audit is simply integrated into financial audit or inspection and examination process. With the goal of making environmental audit a sharp and effective management tool, the Law on Environmental Protection 2020 has put forward more specific and detailed regulations.
