GAZA STRIP: Explosions, air strikes and gunfire rattled northern Gaza on Saturday, the third day of an Israeli military operation that has uprooted tens of thousands of Palestinians and compounded what the UN called “unbearable” living conditions in the territory. A correspondent reported explosions from the Shujaiya area near Gaza City, and a resident saying bodies were seen on the streets. The armed wings of both Hamas and Islamic Jihad said they were engaged in ongoing fighting with Israeli forces there. A resurgence of fighting in the area comes months after Israel declared the command structure of Hamas militants dismantled in northern Gaza. Israel’s military said it was conducting “targeted raids” backed by air strikes against Hamas in the Shujaiya area.

The United States wrapped up its first multidomain exercise with Japan and South Korea in the East China Sea on Saturday, a step forward in Washington's efforts to strengthen and lock in its security partnerships with key Asian allies in the face of growing threats from North Korea and China. The exercise, which is expected to expand in years to come, was also intended to improve the countries' abilities to share missile warnings — increasingly important as North Korea tests ever-more sophisticated systems. South Korea’s military said a joint analysis by South Korean and U.S. authorities assessed that the North Korean missile launch failed. Tensions with North Korea are at their highest point in years, with the pace of Kim Jong Un’s weapons programs intensifying, despite heavy international sanctions. China and North Korea have also been among Russia’s closest allies in its war against Ukraine, while Russia and China are also key allies for North Korea, as well as the military leaders of Myanmar who seized power in 2021 and are facing ever-stiffer resistance in that country’s civil war.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP) — India pulled off a sensational seven-run win against South Africa in a gripping final of the Twenty20 World Cup on Saturday. South Africa, playing its first ever final of an ICC tournament, needed a run-a-ball 30 to win on the back of Heinrich Klaasen’s belligerent 52 off 27 balls. But Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya, who shared seven wickets between them, roared back in the death overs to cut down South Africa at 169-8. We wanted this really bad … very proud of the bunch of boys and the management.”India won its second T20 World Cup but its first world title in 13 years.
