CAIRO (AP) — Famine conditions have spread in Sudan in the North Darfur region and are likely to continue through October due to the ongoing conflict that has torn the country for over 15 months, a global authority on food security warned Thursday. Famine conditions have prevailed as of June and July in Zamam camp, 12 km south of Al Fasher —the capital of North Darfur — where internally displaced people are living, according to the IPC report. The Famine Early Warning Systems Network or FEWS NET Thursday echoed the IPC report, saying that there is “reasonable evidence” that famine thresholds were passed in June in the Zamzam camp. “The available data on acute malnutrition in Zamzam camp from January 2024 revealed malnutrition rates exceeding the IPC Famine threshold,” the IPC said of its July analysis of Zamzam camp. Another IPC report in July said that 755,000 people face IPC Phase 5 in 10 states, five of which are in the Greater Darfur region, North Kordofan, Gezeira, and Khartoum.

The recent heavy rains in northwestern North Korea flooded thousands of houses and a vast extent of farmland leaving many residents homeless and living in makeshift tents, reported North Korea’s state media July 31. North Korea is prone to flooding from heavy summer rains because of poor drainage, deforestation, and dilapidated infrastructure. KCNA said Politburo members later approved the appointments of new Workers’ Party secretaries in the flood-hit regions and a new public security minister. On Aug. 1, South Korea’s Unification Ministry, which handles inter-Korean affairs, said the South was willing to swiftly provide supplies to address the “humanitarian difficulties” facing North Korean residents following the storms. North Korea didn’t immediately respond to the South’s offer and it’s unclear whether they will accept the proposal.

Main driversAround 320,000 people are believed to have been displaced since mid-April in El Fasher, the report explained. “The main drivers of famine in Zamzam camp are conflict and lack of humanitarian access, both of which can immediately be rectified with the necessary political will,” according to the IPC report. As the conflict is the predominant factor driving this famine, the report recommended that all means are exhaustively explored to reduce or resolve the underlying conflict between the parties involved in Sudan.

Once a pivotal player in West Africa, Côte d’Ivoire is having to confront emerging challenges in its neighbourhood, driven by shifts in governance across the hinterland. Over the past year, Burkina Faso’s bilateral relations with its coastal neighbours, including Côte d’Ivoire, have also significantly deteriorated. Thus far, diplomatic tensions between Côte d’Ivoire and the Sahelian governments have yet to have a material impact on trade. For Côte d’Ivoire, deteriorating relations with neighbouring Burkina Faso and Mali risks disrupting commercial ties, given both countries are important trade partners. This ideological shift will further complicate diplomatic and security cooperation between Côte d’Ivoire and its neighbours.

ANTONIO BRONIC/REUTERSFierce wildfires, propelled by strong winds, ravaged areas of Greece and the Balkans on Tuesday, destroying forests and homes and forcing the evacuation of an Albanian resort town, local officials reported. The area has experienced higher-than-normal temperatures and arid conditions throughout the previous month, establishing perfect circumstances for the outbreak of wildfires, according to scientists. In recent years, Greece has experienced an increase in wildfire occurrences during progressively hotter and drier summers, a trend that scientists attribute to climate change. The country has been grappling with hundreds of wildfires since May, coinciding with its record-breaking hottest June and longest-ever heatwave. Europe is experiencing the most rapid warming of any continent globally, with Greece among nations most severely impacted by the consequences of anthropogenic climate change, reported Euronews.
