Nigeria is to receive a $500 million loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to help increase access to electricity and support the country’s energy transition plan. The Bank’s Board of Directors approved the loan to finance the first phase of the country’s Economic Governance and Energy Transition Support Programme (EGET-SP). The loan will help close the financing gap of the Federal Budget in the 2024/25 fiscal year, specifically supporting the implementation of the country’s new Electricity Act and the Nigeria Energy Transition Plan. Programme to support energy transition plan’s policiesThe Nigerian government launched the energy transition plan in August 2022. The energy transition plan envisions the development, by 2050, of 250GW of installed electricity capacity, 90% of which will be renewable.

Despite lagging in installed renewable energy capacity, Africa possesses large untapped renewable energy resources. Solar energy is projected to outcompete other power sources across the continent by 2030. Develop Renewable Energy Infrastructure:The G20 and other partners should support Africa in unlocking its renewable energy potential, including green hydrogen. Strengthen Africa’s participation in renewable energy technology value chains, including lithium-ion batteries.

KEFI has provided its latest update on the company’s Tulu Kapi Gold Project in Ethiopia. KEFI has received confirmation from Project co-lender African Finance Corporation of its preliminary approval. These measures have been applied formally for the whole mining industry and not just for Tulu Kapi, because of the sector’s strategic importance at national, regional and local levels. These initiatives are succeeding, and several mining projects are now activating site preparations, alongside those at Tulu Kapi, which now include initial field and community-focused works. At Tulu Kapi our initial activities are already focused on engineering internationally and community consultations locally.

When excluding the impact of the gas supply shortages in Egypt, Q2 2024 and H1 2024 own-produced sales volumes would have been up 8.1% and 6.6% Y-o-Y, respectively.

Al Jazeera said in its live coverage that Al Ghoul and Al Refee were leaving the scene after an Israeli order to evacuate the area when they were hit, and that it believes the journalists were deliberately targeted. Al Ghoul was previously arrested by the IDF at Al-Shifa hospital in northern Gaza. CPJ has documented the killing of at least seven journalists and media workers affiliated with Al Jazeera since the start of the Israel-Gaza war last October.

TEHRAN, JULY 31: Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said early Wednesday. Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian’s swear-in ceremony on Tuesday. Iran gave no details on how Haniyeh was killed and the Guard said the attack was under investigation. Analysts on Iranian state television immediately began blaming Israel for the attack. Israel is suspected of running a years-long assassination campaign targeting Iranian nuclear scientists and others associated with its atomic programme.

The fifth phase of the Last Mile Connectivity Project (LMCP) in Kenya to connect homes to electricity, has received a KSh 1.85 billion (around $14 million) grant from the Japanese International Co-operation Agency (JICA). The funding will allow Kenya Power to connect 9,121 households across four counties – Nakuru, Kwale, Kilifi and Nyandarua. The JICA grant comes two months after Kenya Power signed 26 contracts for the implementation of Phase 4 of the LMCP. The company’s exit follows the decision of partner CNR International to withdraw from Block 11B/12B, off the southern coast of South Africa, at the beginning of July. King Mohammed VI has invited French President Emmanuel Macron to pay a State visit to the Kingdom following “the clear and strong position” adopted by France on the Moroccan Sahara. In a message sent to Macron, the King told the French President: “It is with interest that I received the important Message You addressed to Me on the occasion of the 25th Throne Day anniversary”. On Tuesday, Morocco’s Royal Office issued a statement describing as a “significant development” France support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and the autonomy plan “as the only basis” for a solution to the Sahara conflict under the Kingdom’s sovereignty. “This announcement by the French Republic, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, is an important and significant development in support of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. In his letter to the King, Macron affirms “that the present and future of Western Sahara are within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.”
