The Moroccan government is preparing the 2025 appropriation bill based on a forecast of 4.6% growth rate, from an estimated 3.3% this year, the finance minister said. The government will press ahead with its social project, which includes generalization of safety nets and financial assistance to the needy, in addition to investing in infrastructure and the promotion of private investments, she told MPs. The appropriation bill is also based on expectations of an average cereals harvest, from a meagre crop year in 2024, due to consecutive droughts. It also assumes a barrel price at 80 dollars, an exchange rate at 9.8% and an inflation rate at 2%. The government is also giving priority to maintaining macroeconomic balances, as it seeks to narrow the budget deficit and foreign debt, she said.

The United Nations has predicted, in its annual report on food security and nutrition, that Africa will overtake Asia as the continent with the highest number of people experiencing hunger by 2030. In 2023 in Asia, 384.5 million people were facing hunger, compared with 298.4 million in Africa. But if current trends continue, 53% of the almost 600 million chronically undernourished people by 2030 will be living in Africa, according to the UN report. Alvaro Lario, president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), described the situation as “alarming” and warned that it would worsen unless a swift action is taken. Africa lags behind Asia in the focus on local production, diversification of crops, the use of fertilizers and more public investment, he added.

Only three named storms have formed over the Atlantic since hurricane season started on June 1 — tropical storms Alberto and Chris, and hurricane Beryl, which on July 2 became the earliest Category 5 hurricane to be recorded over the Atlantic. That deadly event served as a telling reminder of what tropical storms are capable of, but the weather over the Atlantic has been noticeably quiet since then. Fogarty, however, said hurricane season is sure to pick up in the weeks ahead, with the peak of the season typically arriving in the first few weeks of September. “Let’s not wait until these storms are in the news.”In late May, the Canadian Hurricane Centre predicted an active hurricane season fuelled by record high ocean temperatures. Last year, American forecasters called for 12 to 17 named storms, five to nine hurricanes and one to four major hurricanes; in reality, there were 20 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes.
