Special operations forces will then depart Air Base 201 in Agadez, in the country's rural interior, by the September deadline, according to Langley. Air Base 201 serves as the main hub of US aerial intelligence collection and counterterrorism operations in West Africa. The US withdrawal from Niger comes as the latest in a series of setbacks for Washington's military strategy in Africa. Pentagon officials continue to try to find an alternative drone base in West Africa after the planned withdrawal from Air Base 201. China, which maintains its only overseas military base in Djibouti, is "actively seeking and engaging with a number of other countries on the periphery of coastal West Africa, both in the East and the West," Langley said Monday.

With this win, South Africa topped Group 1 followed by defending champions England as the second semifinalist from it. Equally praiseworthy was Kagiso Rabada’s copybook cover drive off Roston Chase when South Africa required 9 off 7 balls. We would have liked to be a lot more convincing,” said South African skipper Aiden Markram. In a contest that was headlined by the most revered names in T20 history, two under-rated cricketers held forte. Maharaj bowled a dream delivery for a classical left-arm spinner to get rid of West Indies skipper Powell.

Unmetered Band A customers in Nigeria are to be the first tranche of electricity customers to receive meters as the government looks to up revenue generation in the sector. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently approved the use of N21 billion (around $13.5m) for electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to fit meters within a specified timeline. “The installation of contracted volume meters shall be completed within 60 days from the date of approval of the process by the Commission, and all contracts for the supply and installation of meters shall be filed with the Commission,” said NERC. The NERC order follows last month’s Senate approval of President Bola Tinubu’s request for sign-off on a $500 million World Bank loan to increase the supply of electricity meters across the country. Nigeria: DisCos ordered to verify bona fides of electricity customersThe funding is aimed at addressing DisCos’ inability to raise financing in the form of debt or additional equity.

There’s a new-found tenacity to them and it’s seen them get to a T20 World Cup knockout for the first time in a decade. They were largely responsible for keeping West Indies quiet and for several of the 57 dot balls West Indies faced in their innings - the equivalent of 9.3 overs - and the most at this T20 World Cup. And once the tears have dried, West Indies will look to their batting as the major reason they were unable to advance. Their bowlers were worked with what they had and had South Africa 15 for 2 in two overs, before the rain came down. Chase's 3 for 12 and Josephs' 2 for 25 kept them in it but even with South Africa seven down, West Indies were unable to pull off a miracle.

A rain delay, revised target and a batting collapse… The ghosts that have haunted South Africa in the past and looked buried. The equation was simple for South Africa and West Indies following England’s qualification on Sunday evening. Even the revised DLS target didn’t alter the dynamics, but still somehow South Africa managed to induce life into a game that appeared dead. “A lot of relief to get through to the semi-final…not going to be brain-washed by that,” South Africa captain Aiden Markram said. When Klaasen’s characteristic 10-ball 22 ended in the eighth over, South Africa had 77 already on board.

Virtually all British banks have stopped financing smaller independent oil and gas producers, responsible for the bulk of output and investment in the North Sea, Neptune Energy has revealed. “The future of the North Sea is now dependent upon the US banks or Norwegian banks and not on the UK banks. "Lloyds' new policy marks an important turning point in the dangerous relationship that exists between leading UK banks and fossil fuel companies. Small U.S. Banks Boost Oil & Gas FinancingThe situation could not be more different in the U.S. where smaller regional banks have significantly boosted their lending to oil and gas firms over the past two years. On a global scale, fossil fuel financing remains dominated by four U.S. banks--JPMorgan Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America--who together account for one quarter of all fossil fuel financing over the last six years.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) could utilise its comparative advantage in the production of wind energy, according to the World Wind Energy Council. With sufficient investment, up to 1.4TW of offshore wind can be made available in the region, the council said in its latest report. “The significant potential of offshore wind energy indicates that there can, and should, be development in the Middle East,” the report said. The Moroccan Government has been taking “serious steps” to expand offshore wind in the region, said the report. Saudi Arabia is also looking to develop 106GW of offshore wind capacity along its eastern and western coasts.

"The U.S. had solid partners in the region," said Catherine Nzuki at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies. "The second U.S. official acknowledged that the U.S. military was taking stock of the rapid changes. And so I don't know if the door is completely closed," Brown said.
