It’s over!”The asylum-seekers finally emerged from the sea defeated, but there was no doubt that they would try to reach the U.K. again. Europe’s increasingly strict asylum rules, growing xenophobia and hostile treatment of migrants were pushing them north. While the U.K. government has been hostile, too, many migrants have family or friends in the U.K. and a perception they will have more opportunities there. At least 20 people have died so far this year trying to reach the U.K., according to Utopia 56. In late April, five people died, including a 7-year-old girl who was crushed inside a rubber boat after more than 110 people boarded it frantically trying to escape police.

North Macedonia entered NATO in 2019, following a historic deal with Greece that ended a decades-old dispute over cultural heritage and history and saw the small country change its name from Macedonia to North Macedonia. Mickoski said recently he will use the new constitutional name — North Macedonia — during the oath and in all official meetings and events. EU membership negotiations with North Macedonia and fellow candidate Albania began in 2022 and the process is expected to take years.

Morocco rejected the foreign interferences in the domestic affairs of Sahel countries, which do not need a tutor in managing their internal issues. The remark was made by foreign minister Nasser Bourita following talks in Rabat with his Burkinabe peer Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré. “With their men and skills, Sahel countries are capable of settling their own issues,” Bourita said. Democratic transition is necessary and it is up to the elites of the Sahel countries to find their way through, he said. Morocco’s policy is that of « supporting” instead of “substitution,” he said, noting that Sahel countries are well-placed to solve their own problems.

The Byzantine Empire would no longer hold imperial control over African regions after the Islamic conquest, but the Greco-Roman influences remained in its art and coins. It would start issuing its official coinage in the late third century, with coins issued for 18 rulers in gold, silver and copper. After Aksum’s conversion to Christianity during Ezana’s reign, from around 340 to 380 A.D., some silver coins included a cross. Technical studies have shown that they likely were struck locally but may have been on planchets recycled from Byzantine coins. The coinage of Africa provides evidence of the many different cultures that shaped North Africa in late antiquity.
