Finding fossils in Texas, USWhen thinking of a camel, many picture one in a desert in Northern Africa, the Middle East or India. Finding the fossilised remains of one at the Waco Mammoth National Monument in Texas is a surprise to most who visit, but camels did in fact originate in North America. At their peak, Western camels were found mainly in the western parts of North America, including parts of Canada, all the way to northern Mexico. Wild and free in the Australian OutbackOf all the strange places to find camels, Central Australia is at the top of the list. A book by Ken Thompson, which examines invasive species, is aptly called Where do Camels Belong?

Egypt’s MoneyHash, a leading payment orchestration platform in the Middle East and Africa, has raised a US$4.5 million seed funding round to help it expand. Founded in 2021 by Nader Abdelrazik and Mustafa Eid, MoneyHash has developed a proprietary payment orchestration platform and end-to-end payment operating system. In 2023, MoneyHash doubled its network of integrations, achieved triple revenue, and grew its processing volume by 30x. The US$4.5 million seed round of funding was co-led by COTU Ventures and Sukna Ventures, with participation from RZM Investment, Dubai Future District Fund, VentureFriends, and a group of strategic investors and operators. The funding will enable MoneyHash to further invest in its technology and expand its business growth initiatives across the region.

The number of funded ventures, and the total funding raised, declined for the first time since 2016, though not as dramatically as many had feared. But the gender diversity figures were better than usual. Looking at total funding – in 2023 US$399,694,000 in funding went to startups with at least one female co-founder, a share of 16.7 per cent. Compared once again with Disrupt Africa’s historic data, we once again see an increase in gender diversity. So at least there has been some good news from a generally depressing 2023 from a funding standpoint – an increase in gender diversity.

EDF Renewables North America has inked a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Southern California Public Power Authority (SCPPA) for a segment of the Bonanza Solar and Storage initiative. This agreement captures the commitment to provide a steady supply of carbon-free electricity from the project’s 125 MWac solar photovoltaic (PV) setup and 65 MW 4-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to SCPPA’s members, including Pasadena Water & Power and Azusa Light & Water. Situated in Clark County, Nevada, the Bonanza Solar and Storage project will boast a combined capacity of 300 MWac solar PV and 195 MW 4-hour BESS. Situated in the arid expanse of the southern Nevada desert on federal land, the Project anticipates generating around 500 employment opportunities at the height of construction. Acknowledging the significance of preserving wildlife, habitats, and environmental assets, the Bonanza Solar and Storage project is engaged in close cooperation with federal and state agencies to mitigate its impacts on the ecosystem.

Analysts at Berenberg raised their target price on drugmaker Hikma Pharmaceuticals from 1,960.0p to 2,000.0p on Tuesday, citing more stability in its generics unit. "We adjusted our estimates to reflect slightly better generics earnings and our price target moves up to £20. Morgan Stanley downgraded Unilever on Tuesday to 'underweight' from 'equalweight' and cut its price target on the stock to 3,775.0p from 4,100.0p. RBC Capital Markets has reiterated an 'outperform' rating and 575p target price for Rentokil Initial ahead of the pest control group's full-year results next week. Barclays upgraded Flutter Entertainment on Tuesday to 'overweight' from 'equalweight' and lifted its price target to 200.0p from 153.0p, citing multi-year earnings growth.

Morocco and Romania have signed a military and technical cooperation agreement that covers training and exercises, the defense industry, technical support and the exchange of expertise. The agreement was initialed this Tuesday in Rabat by Minister Delegate in charge of the National Defense Administration Abdeltif Loudyi and Romania’s Minister of National Defense, Angel Tîlvăr, who is on a working visit to Morocco at the head of a large delegation. The agreement also covers military health, cybersecurity, and the establishment of a joint military commission to define areas of cooperation. The joint commission will convene alternately in Rabat and Bucharest. The two sides also expressed their shared ambition to consolidate these relations in the future, through the implementation of the provisions of the just signed military and technical cooperation agreement, as well as through regular exchanges of visits by officials from both countries.

Conservationists raised the alarm on Tuesday as South Africa reported a sharp increase in rhino poaching, with almost 500 animals killed last year. A wild white rhino is seen at an undisclosed location in the North-West Province of South Africa, on April 2, 2023. The figures paint "a worrying picture", conservation group Save the Rhino International said, calling for more resources to be urgently deployed against poaching rings. The lion's share were poached in eastern KwaZulu-Natal province, with the Hluhluwe–Imfolozi park – Africa's oldest reserve – alone losing 307 animals, according to the government. About 15,000 live in South Africa, according to a separate estimate by the International Rhino Foundation.
