Blinne Ní Ghrálaigh, an adviser to South Africa’s legal team, said the international community had failed Palestinians despite 'dehumanising, genocidal rhetoric' by Israeli governmental officials, praising South Africa for initiating proceedings against Israel at the international court of justice. Ghrálaigh told the court that this was 'the first genocide in history where its victims are broadcasting their own destruction in real time in the desperate so far vain hope that the world might do something'. Israel has rejected South Africa's allegations

By Mike Wackett 11/01/2024North European container ports are facing a potential capacity crunch in early February, as the armada of alliance vessels from Asia that have been re-routed around Africa reach the Channel. Vessel ETAs have been pushed back by 10 days or more, depending on whether voyages were paused, with alliance carriers fighting to secure arrival slots at hub terminals. “At that time, terminals were already chock-a-block full from the pandemic demand surge, the land side was stuffed and quayside work was painfully slow. Nevertheless, carriers are keeping a watchful eye on the situation in Germany, in case there is an escalation of industrial action, affecting intermodal operations for longer periods. Indeed, with market rates going through the roof and said to be reaching $10,000 per 40ft for prompt shipments from China to North Europe, the deployment of smaller, ad-hoc tonnage by HMM and others will be highly lucrative.

The Department of Agriculture has announced the lifting of the ban on South African Hass avocado exports to Japan. The ban was lifted at the end of November last year, with both nations agreeing on a work plan to ensure the correct implementation of export protocols. Reggie Ngcobo, spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD), stated that South Africa is a leading global producer and exporter of avocados. Registered growers are required to adhere to good agricultural practices, including orchard sanitation and an effective integrated pest management system. These measures are crucial for producing avocados in areas free from quarantine pests, a matter of significant concern for South Africa.

Recent developments in measurement technologies, such as satellite imagery, reveal that methane emissions probably are substantially higher than earlier anticipated. As a result, measures to limit methane emissions are gaining increasing attention across the industry. “Reducing methane emissions is generally a more low-hanging fruit than cutting emissions of carbon dioxide, and therefore has the most promising potential for the energy sector in the short and medium term – provided the emissions are detected. Scarce and low-quality methane data is one of the key challenges to curb methane emissions. This suggests that lower methane emissions primarily occur when companies have direct operational control over assets.

The Netanyahu regime has taken out after more or less anything that might be of use or value in Gaza, anything that might make life meaningful, including that area’s precious olive groves and its environment. For more than two years, water from the Mediterranean was flushed into the tunnel system, wreaking havoc on Gaza’s environment. Satellite images released in early December affirm that 22% of Gaza’s agricultural land, including countless olive orchards, has been completely destroyed. White Phosphorus and Bombs, Bombs, and More BombsWhile contaminating aquifers and uprooting olive groves, Israel is now also poisoning Gaza from above. Open RAN vendor Parallel Wireless lauded a milestone of installing equipment in 1,500 sites across various African markets through partnerships with authorities and operators in a number of countries. The company noted it was also preparing for “for future 5G upgrades across Africa” as open RAN continues to grow. Parallel Wireless indicated providing connectivity in parts of the continent required meeting unique challenges, including geographic factors and issues sourcing electricity. In a separate announcement, the company revealed a deal with Nigerian infrastructure sharing specialist Hotspot Network to use its technology in 500 sites in rural parts of the country. It claimed this, and its other deployments in the region, demonstrated open RAN architecture could “help connect the disconnected, bringing them in touch with previously out-of-reach banking, health and educational services”.

As public outrage over the humanitarian impact of Israel’s military operations in Gaza grows, calls for a cease-fire in the U.S. and globally are mounting. But for those concerned with the bottom-line humanitarian outcomes in the conflict, is a cease-fire ultimately the best way forward? The reality is that cease-fires often fail and for the most part have limited and at times even adverse impacts. These lessons from the past failures and successes of cease-fires, and not political outrage, should inform the U.S. response to the horrific humanitarian suffering in Gaza. Research on the use of cease-fires in conflicts reveals relatively disappointing results that have largely been ignored in the current clamor for a cease-fire as the primary response to suffering in Gaza.
