Morocco’s trade deficit shrank 7.5% in 2023 thanks to a record performance by the tourism and automotive sector and higher remittances from Moroccans abroad. The deficit stood at 286 billion dirhams following a drop in imports to 715 billion and an increase in exports to 429 billion dirhams. Morocco’s phosphates and derivatives exports fell 34% to 76 billion dirhams, a performance that was offset by strong sales by other sectors. The automotive sector in particular posted a record $14.1 billion exports, while tourism receipts jumped 11.7% to $10.4 billion. Remittances grew to a record $11.5 billion, up 4%, a growth that was also reflected in the inflow of foreign direct investments.

The latest attempt by South Africa to gain international prominence by trying to transform itself into a “stakeholder” in the Sahara conflict was described as strange and untimely. This came in comments by the International Committee for Dialogue and Peace on South Africa’s invitation to the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura. It is therefore necessary to respect the process for settling conflicts and disputes, dealt with within the framework of the United Nations, as is the case for the Western Sahara conflict. The Committee made it clear that the United Nations has clearly defined the stakeholders directly involved in the conflict resolution process: Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and Spain. Neither the African Union nor South Africa are actors in this conflict.

The electricity sale price by STEG is set at 200 millimes, compared to the 300 millimes cost of producing electricity from natural gas. Nigeria could go into its Africa Cup of Nations semifinal match against South Africa on Wednesday without its star player, Victor Osimhen. The striker was still in Abidjan on Tuesday morning after he missed the squad’s flight to Bouaké on Monday because of abdominal discomfort. It added that the Napoli star will, however, join the rest of the squad before 17h on Tuesday if he is cleared by the medical team. The reigning Africa Player of the Year did not train with the squad on Monday evening and on the weekend, was substituted late in the quarter-final match against Angola. Although Osimhen has only scored one goal in the tournament, his tireless performances have played a large role in Nigeria making it through to the semi-finals for a record-equalling 16th time in its 20 AFCON appearances.

“By getting the partner in those countries to pay half of the costs, we can still keep a lid on soaring shipment costs through Red Sea,” said a Dubai based food commodities trader with extensive sourcing and selling commitments in North Africa. Issue with exportsBut now, other UAE based entities are also having to find some solutions to what’s going on in the Red Sea. This is why Harish Tahiliani, Managing Director of Arab India Spices, says: “There are some longstanding supplier relations that are at stake because of the Red Sea issue. For now, there is no one in the shipping industry willing to make guesstimates on when the Red Sea turmoil will likely wind down.
