The Constitutional Court in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) upheld Tuesday January 9 results of December Presidential elections, making incumbent President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, winner of the process and entitled to a second four-year term in office. Only 40 per cent of voters, 18 million people headed to the December 20 presidential and legislatives. Opposition leader Moise Katumbi finished behind Tshisekedi with 18 percent of the vote while Tshisekedi’s top contender in 2018 Martin Fayulu received 5 percent. Noble Peace Prize winner Denis Mukwege, a physician renowned for treating women brutalized by sexual violence in eastern DR Congo and candidate, got less than 1 percent. Katumbi and Fayulu rejected the results but stopped short to lodge complaints with the court arguing that body is controlled by the state.

Until the morning of Oct. 7, the town of Sderot in southern Israel was a parable of hope and success. The trials of those who built Sderot were indeed traumatic but did not define them. The city’s residents devoted themselves to moving on and forging a flourishing future built on educating the next generation. Our path was never easy, especially after Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza in 2005, which marked the beginning of a never-ending struggle for Sderot’s residents. The children of Sderot grew up in an atmosphere of perpetual danger.

Africa & Byzantium, organized in collaboration with the Cleveland Museum of Art, is a joy in many respects. Africa & Byzantium sheds light on an underrepresented area of art history and showcases a new field of interdisciplinary studies on medieval Africa, a period nearly unexplored by major galleries and museums. Although Byzantium was a vast empire that spanned parts of Africa, Europe and Asia, its close connections with Africa have been the subject of little study. “Through spectacular and widely unknown works of art, Africa & Byzantium illuminates the development, continuity, and adaptation of Byzantine art and culture in North Africa and the Horn of Africa, recentering African artistic contributions to the pre-modern period.”Africa & Byzantium traces the three stages of exchange between the two shores of the empire. The exhibition will travel to the Cleveland Museum of Art after it closes in New York on March 3.

Located in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, Sitrusrand, started as a 10-hectare mixed farm now stretches for 60 kilometers along the Sundays River. It has 1,400 hectares dedicated to citrus fruits which the business packs itself. Employing 1,500 people, Sitrusrand exports citrus fruit to many countries. I was spending every single minute of the day in there, and I remember how tough it was sorting fruit by hand, making decisions between four classes of fruit. This made it possible to dedicate one packhouse exclusively to oranges, another to lemons, and another to soft citrus.

Posted on by gkramerThis week in North Philly Notes, Grant Farred, author of The Perversity of Gratitude, writes about what his apartheid education taught him. I write this blog on the 4th of January, 2024, having just hours ago received my advance copies of The Perversity of Gratitude: An Apartheid Education. “Apartheid made me think.” That is the opening line and the resonant sentiment that animates The Perversity of Gratitude. I am grateful to my apartheid education, perverse as that might seem; my anti-apartheid teachers prepared me for this moment. But I do have a singular advantage: my apartheid education.

The trial of Ousman Sonko, a Gambian ex-interior minister accused of crimes against humanity committed under the regime of a former dictator Yahya Jammeh from 2006 until 2016, began in a federal court in Switzerland on Monday (8 January). Sonko is the highest-ranking official under Jammeh’s dictatorship, to be prosecuted for widespread rights abuses. Sonko is only the second individual tried under that rule since Switzerland enforced it in 2011. Sonko is accused of having committed the alleged crimes in his roles first within the army, then as inspector general of the police and finally as a government minister. Detained after a complaint by the Geneva-based NGO Trial International, Sonko has been in custody in Switzerland since January 2017 after applying for asylum following his sacking from the post.
