Canon Middle East and Canon Central and North Africa have recently conducted an internship workshop, giving students and fresh graduates in the UAE HQ a platform to share their perspectives on youth skilling and organizational development. The goal was to foster stronger connections within Canon’s internship community and enhance the overall workplace experience for interns. Interns called for a workplace culture where they can take a more proactive stance and seize opportunities to lead. The internship workshop demonstrates Canon's commitment to empowering youth and bridging the gap between education and the business world. Nigerian food e-commerce startup Pricepally raises $1.3m seed round
Nigerian startup Pricepally, a fresh and packaged food e-commerce platform, has raised US$1.3 million in seed funding to help it scale. Launched in 2019 by Luther Lawoyin, Jumai Abalaka, Deepak Bansal and Monsunmola Adefemi, Pricepally sources farm-fresh produce and distributes it via its e-commerce platform. The startup has now raised a US$1.3 million seed round from investors including Samurai Incubate, SOSV, ELEA, Hi2 Global, Chui Ventures, and David Mureithi, the former MD of Unilever West Africa. Pricepally will use the funding to expanding its footprint, entering new cities and growing in existing markets Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. It will also enhance its technology, optimise end-to-end operations, introduce innovative consumer features, and nurture burgeoning B2B markets.

The West Should Give Up the Battle of Narratives
Rather than retreating into a defensive battle of narratives, the West should see this as an opportunity to move beyond a discourse that has never held water. Some enlightened quarters fear that this will set back the Western counterattack in the battle of narratives in the global south. The West can finally put the battle of narratives into its bin of lost wars and move on. The countries of the global south have been very clear: They are not looking for a narrative from anyone. It will take considerable time and effort—and quite a few policy reversals—before the West can return to the battle of narratives.

The burden of colorectal cancer attributable to dietary risk in Middle East and North African from 1990 to 2019
DALYs and ASMRs attributed to nutritional risk for CRC increased in MENA regions from 1990 to 2019. However, the risk of a diet low in fiber, milk, and whole grains was much higher than that of a diet rich in red meat and low in calcium. One study showed that a diet low in milk, calcium, and whole grains was responsible for 81.64% of DALYs and 81.61% of deaths for CRC6. A study comparing disease risk factors using GBD data showed that diet-related risk factors increased the global burden more than smoking or alcohol14. Dietary factors increase the risk of CRC through two possible mechanisms, including increasing weight and causing inflammation.

‘Libya scenario’: Sudan could break apart, experts warn
The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is waging war against the armed forces and there have been reports of new massacres in Sudan’s western Darfur region. Experts now warn the country could face a ‘Libya scenario’, in reference to the North African country long divided between two rival administrations in its east and west. “The rising tide of militarisation along ethnic and regional lines deepens social fissures in Sudan,” says Youssef. Meanwhile, the army-aligned government has been all but exiled to the eastern city of Port Sudan. Across Darfur, home to about a quarter of Sudan’s 48 million people, over 1.5 million have been internally displaced since the war began.

India-Africa trade gains momentum, projected to cross $100 billion in 2024 – The North Africa Post
Trade between India and Africa increased by 9.3% between fiscal year 2021/2022 and 2022/2023, reaching $98 billion, according to India’s external affairs minister, as more than 30 African countries have benefited from India’s duty-free tariff preference (DFTP) scheme for least-developed countries. Drinking water, irrigation, rural solar electrification plants and rural sugar and textile factories are part of India’s development outreach to the continent. The minister also pointed to India’s medical support to numerous African nations during the pandemic as a case of India’s continued outreach to the country. He also spoke of how Indian and African nations worked together during the pandemic to go to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) for vaccine access. “For India, the rise of Africa is key to global rebalancing.” Jaishankar said.

Johann RossouwThe African National Congress is losing the support of its communist and trade union allies in South Africa after 12 years in power. The African National Congress (ANC) has fallen far short of keeping the promises it made for social justice in the new South Africa. Mbeki was keen that South Africa should not repeat the mistakes that socialist governments of other African countries had made in the early years of independence. In trying to correct past injustices, South Africa is getting further away from the non-racialism enshrined in its constitution. Instead, race has been allowed to remain the single socio-political attribute by which South Africans are defined (see South Africa: the statistics).

Mini-grid electrification for rural energy access in Mauritania
It will do so by establishing 7 mini-grids in the southeast region of Mauritania (Hodh El Gharbi and Hodh Echargui). The Government of Mauritania wants to expand its electricity supply and has started encouraging investment into its renewable energy sector to stimulate its economy, with an aim to reach universal energy access by 2030. According to Power Africa Mauritania has an energy access rate of 30%, which is broken down to 56% access in urban areas, but only 5% in rural areas. Hence, the government of Mauritania plans to provide electricity access to localities of more than 500 inhabitants by expanding transmission lines and offering decentralised mini-grid solutions. SEFA is a multi-donor Special Fund, with an overarching goal to help Africa reach SDG7, that provides catalytic finance to unlock private sector investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Ethiopia embarks on extensive digital ID rollout
from ADANE BIKILA in Addis Ababa, EthiopiaEthiopia BureauADDIS ABABA, (CAJ News) – ETHIOPIA is to provide digital identity cards to 9 million citizens and residents in the next three years. NIDP has a cooperation agreement with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to facilitate access to the digital IDs documents for vulnerable migrant returnees, displaced persons and affected communities. Abibatou Wane, IOM Ethiopia Chief of Mission, said vulnerable people have difficulty accessing basic socio-economic rights and necessities due to the absence of legal identification. “This partnership enhances access to national digital ID for migrants, IDPs and affected communities,” Wane said. IOM Ethiopia has assisted over 8 800 migrant returnees through Assisted Voluntary and Reintegration and Voluntary Humanitarian Return (AVR/VHR) programmes this year.
