Voting at Tajuddin Hall, one of the 21 polling centres in Jahangirnagar University’s Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election, resumed after a half-hour suspension, leaving voters waiting in long lines. The halt followed a brief incident when Sheikh Sadi Hasan, candidate for vice-president from the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal faction, attempted to enter the hall, triggering tensions among voters and polling agents. Professor Lutful Elahi, provost of Tajuddin Hall, confirmed the disruption around 11:45am and said voting resumed at 12:15pm once the situation was under control. Of the 947 registered voters at Tajuddin Hall, only around 350 had cast ballots by 2:30pm, forcing students to wait in long lines. Despite the brief interruption, polling continued across all 21 halls, reflecting a tense but largely orderly voting process in the university’s fiercely contested student union election.

Bangladesh buys more power from India, lifts fuel oil use as electricity demand risesBangladesh is boosting power imports from India and output from fuel oil-fired power plants in a scramble to meet rising electricity demand as it grapples with constraints on gas supply and coal plant maintenance, industry officials and analysts say. Natural gas accounted for about two-thirds of Bangladesh's power demand in the decade that ended in 2020, but the country has been boosting power imports and local coal-fired generation due to gas infrastructure challenges and to cut costs. A senior official of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) said many gas-fired plants were not running at capacity because of pressure-related technical problems, while coal-fired power output was lower due to maintenance outages. "When power demand started increasing since March, they had to increase imports and fuel oil-based power generation," said Shafiqul Alam, a Bangladesh-based analyst at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. Still, gas-fired power generation fell 1.2 percent, according to government data.

Bangladesh has for the first time put a value on unpaid household and care work, in a move seen as a step towards recognising women's invisible contribution to the economy. The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and UN Women Bangladesh have launched a new Household Production Satellite Account (HPSA), developed with support from the Asian Development Bank under the global Women Count programme. The HPSA estimates that activities such as cooking, cleaning, childcare and caring for the elderly or disabled contributed Tk 6.7 trillion ($56bn) in 2021 - equivalent to 18.9 percent of the country's GDP.Women carried out 85 percent of that work. The initiative follows the interim government's pledge in the 2025-26 budget to reflect unpaid labour in official economic data. The estimates draw on the 2021 Time Use Survey and the 2022 Labour Force Survey. The report recommends changes to laws and budgets to recognise unpaid care, the creation of care-related jobs in the private sector, and the introduction of family-friendly workplace policies. It also urges efforts to engage men and boys in caregiving to reduce the disproportionate burden on women.Women and Children Affairs Advisor Sharmeen Murshid said the findings would help shape gender-responsive policymaking and shift public attitudes towards recognising the care economy.UN Women's Country Representative Gitanjali Singh described unpaid care as "an investment, not a cost".ADB's Principal Statistician Mahinthan Joseph Mariasingham said the estimates provide evidence to address wage gaps and can act as a guide for investment in care services. "bdnews24.com
