HONG KONG, Jan 20, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Asian markets extended losses Tuesday and silver hit a fresh peak on fears of a US-EU trade war fuelled by Donald Trump's tariff threat over opposition to his grab for Greenland. Silver hit another record high, touching $94.73 in Asian trade, while gold held just shy of its own peak hit Monday. Meanwhile, Treasury yields rose amid a move out of US assets fuelled by the uncertainty sparked by Trump's latest volley. The announcement fuelled fresh worries the government will borrow more cash at a time when questions are already be asked about the country's finances. "A NATO fracture, even a rhetorical one, is not something markets are trained to shrug off."

HANOI, Vietnam, Jan 20, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Vietnam's top leader promised to fight corruption Tuesday in an address to a twice-a-decade congress of the Communist Party where he is seeking expanded powers similar to China's political structure. The party is "determined to fight corruption... considering the private sector is an important pillar of the economy", he said. Experts say if Lam secures both roles it will signal the supremacy of his security-dominated faction. One source briefed on party deliberations told AFP that Lam's bid for expanded powers had been provisionally approved. But unlike in present-day China or North Korea, political power in Vietnam has not been concentrated in one paramount leader.

MELBOURNE, Jan 20, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - A jittery Madison Keys got the defence of her Australian Open crown off to a stuttering start Tuesday, losing the first four games before rallying to stay in the title hunt. She started her season with quarter-final exits at Brisbane and Adelaide, admitting before the Grand Slam to being nervous as defending champion. "I've been thinking about this moment for basically a year," said Keys of walking out on centre court again. Showing no nerves, she stunned the American by breaking again and raced 4-0 clear before Keys finally woke up and battled back. The gritty comeback was the catalyst for a far more convincing second set, breaking straight away and racing into a 4-0 lead before sealing the match with ease after 1hr 40mins.

The crash late on Sunday is Spain's deadliest train accident since 2013, when 80 people died after a train veered off a curved section of track outside the northwestern city of Santiago de Compostela. It crossed onto the other track, where it crashed into an oncoming train, which also derailed. Renfe, the operator of the second train travelling to the southern city of Huelva, said it was carrying 184 passengers. Survivor Lucas Meriako, who was travelling on the first train that derailed, told La Sexta television that it looked "like a horror movie".

The ICCB report described the banking system as the backbone of Bangladesh’s economic journey, responsible for mobilizing savings, financing trade, and generating employment. In a move described as the largest in Bangladesh’s financial history, the Bank Resolution Ordinance 2025 was recently enacted to handle distressed financial institutions. The ICCB report placed heavy emphasis on the necessity of a strong, professional, and independent Bangladesh Bank. Global experience suggests that an independent central bank is essential for handling financial pressures, maintaining economic confidence, and attracting investment. Under Sheikh Hasina’s government, scarcity was anticipated and managed through LNG imports, LPG and CNG continuity, subsidies, and active state intervention. The result is a deepening gas crisis that exposes how a manageable challenge was turned into a national emergency, one that did not have to happen. The Anatomy of Bangladesh’s Gas System CollapseThe gas crisis has moved beyond short-term disruption and entered a phase of systemic failure. GAS CRISIS: A system full of holesTaken together, developments between 2024 and 2026 show that Bangladesh’s gas crisis is the product of governance breakdown under the interim administration. But while I’m very hopeful about our future, today, I would be remiss in not saying I’m concerned about it. Growing up, I was taught that you get educated, work hard, keep your nose clean, respect authority, have dreams and make them happen. Everything I’ve ever done in my life was the result of some ability, but mostly hard work and recognizing and taking advantage of opportunity. That same formula — hard work, taking advantage of opportunity and a bit of luck is available to everyone. Will we go over and self-destruct, or will we recognize the warning signs and bright red flashing lights before our eyes?

Even though the price of domestic yarn is up to $0.20 higher than imported yarn, readymade garment (RMG) industry owners are ready to buy it in the interest of the country's industry. However, there is one condition - the bonded warehouse facility cannot be withdrawn for yarn imports without ensuring this price difference. However, owners do not object to paying a maximum price of $0.20 more than imported yarn to sustain the domestic industry. It is learnt that currently, a large part of the export-oriented garment factories is using yarn imported from India. On behalf of BGMEA, he urged the government to immediately withdraw the decision to impose duty on yarn imports.
