BTMA announces indefinite closure of all textile mills from February 1
The Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) on Thursday announced that all textile mills across the country will be shut down indefinitely from February 1, citing the government’s failure to take effective measures to protect local yarn-producing mills. BTMA President Shawkat Aziz Russell made the announcement at a press conference held at the association’s office in Kawran Bazar, Dhaka, in the presence of senior BTMA leaders. “We have decided to close the factories from February 1 out of sheer compulsion,” Russell said. “Even if we sell all our properties, it will not be possible to repay the debts,” he added. BTMA leaders at the press conference warned that without immediate policy support and industry-friendly decisions, the textile sector could slide into a deeper crisis.

‘999’ call saves four fishermen adrift in Bay
DHAKA, Jan 22, 2026 (BSS) – Four fishermen, who had been drifting in the Bay of Bengal for nearly 12 hours after their engine-driven boat broke down, were rescued today following a call to the national emergency service 999. Upon receiving the call, 999 personnel immediately informed the Coast Guard control room and the Saint Martin’s Coast Guard station to initiate an urgent rescue operation. The call was received by 999 call taker Constable Naim Islam, while 999 dispatcher SI Sabbir Ahmed Nixon coordinated and monitored the rescue operation with the concerned Coast Guard units. Acting on the information, a rescue team of the Saint Martin’s Coast Guard recovered the four fishermen around 10:00 am from the Badarpathar area in the deep sea, approximately 12 kilometres (about five nautical miles) from Chhera Dwip. The rescued fishermen were given primary medical treatment and later safely transported to Saint Martin’s Island.

Dhaka court rejects journalist Anis Alamgir’s bail in anti-terror case
A Dhaka court has rejected journalist Anis Alamgir’s bail petition in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Judge Md Alamgir of the Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court-1 passed the order on Thursday, lawyer Taslima Jahan Popy confirmed, bdnews24.com reports. Alamgir was remanded for five days on Dec 15 and sent to prison on Dec 20, where he remains. The complaint claims the accused have been directly and indirectly involved in conspiracies aimed at destabilising the state. The complainant also alleged that since Aug 5 last year, the suspects have campaigned on social media and appeared on television talk shows to revive a banned organisation and rehabilitate the Awami League.

Tarique Rahman launches BNP campaign, targets misuse of religion
BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman formally launched his election campaign from Sylhet on Thursday, seeking votes for the party’s sheaf of paddy symbol at his first public rally, held at the Alia Madrasa ground. Campaign kicks off for first election after Monsoon Revolution
The election campaign formally began across Bangladesh on Thursday, marking the start of the first national parliamentary polls since the August 5, 2024 political changeover—an election widely seen as a defining test of the country’s political reset. Bangladesh approves proposal to sign EPA with Japan
The Council of Advisers on Thursday approved a proposal to sign the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with Japan, which will help Bangladesh enjoy immediate duty-free access to the Japanese market for 7,379 products. In return, Japan will receive immediate duty-free access to 1,039 products from Bangladesh through the signing of the EPA between Bangladesh and Japan. It will be a milestone and historic agreement, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam told the reporters at the Foreign Service Academy. As a Least Developed Country (LDC), the press secretary said, Bangladesh will, for the first time, sign an EPA with Japan, the world’s fourth-largest economy. The Council gave final approval to drafts of the Bangladesh Private Export Processing Zones Act (Repeal) Ordinance, 2026, the Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026, the Bangladesh House Building Finance Corporation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026, the Gambling Prevention Ordinance, 2026, the Dhaka Central University Ordinance, 2026, the Private Educational Institutions Teachers and Employees Retirement Benefits Board Ordinance, 2026 and the Private Educational Institutions Teachers and Employees Welfare Trust Ordinance, 2026.
