The BNP has announced a two-day programme to mark Independence and National Day. After the president and prime minister pay tribute at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar, BNP leaders will place wreaths there on behalf of the party. Speaking about the programme, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said Independence and National Day marks one of Bangladesh's most important achievements, giving the country a distinct identity on the world map and before the international community. Rizvi noted that the BNP had already published a poster marking Independence Day and would also bring out special supplements in several national dailies on Mar 26. He added that, alongside the central programme, BNP units in districts and municipalities would organise discussion meetings and other events to mark the day, while affiliated and associate bodies would also take their own initiatives.

The "Terafab", a manufacturing facility based near Austin, Texas, will aim to produce one terawatt of computing power per year, Musk said. That is slightly less than the total power generation capacity of the United States, according to an industry group. Musk said the project would be run jointly by his electric-vehicle firm Tesla and his rocket company SpaceX. "That rate is much less than we would like... and we need the chips, so we're going to build the Terafab." Eventually, the project aims to make chips to support 100 to 200 gigawatts of computing power on Earth, and a terawatt in space.

The poll risks turning into a referendum on the far-right leader herself, ahead of parliamentary elections next year. Meloni's hard-right government wants to change Italy's constitution to separate the role of judges and prosecutors and reform their oversight body. The reform would divide the CSM into two separate councils, one for judges and one for prosecutors, and create a new 15-member disciplinary court. In 2016, then-premier Matteo Renzi staked his career on a constitutional reform that voters rejected, toppling his government. This weekend's reform is highly technical and some voters admitted to being swayed more by the politics than the substance.

MAINZ, Germany, March 22, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservative CDU faces a regional election battle Sunday in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate, now held by the centre-left Social Democratic Party. Merz's Christian Democratic Union has enjoyed a narrow poll lead over the SPD -- their coalition partners at the national level -- who have ruled the mid-sized state for 35 years. The CDU's top candidate in Rhineland-Palatinate is the brother of Merz's national transport minister Patrick Schnieder. But he stressed that the CDU win he hoped for over the SPD should not distract the two parties from their government cooperation at the national level. "The next day I will continue discussions with the SPD party leaders how we can get this country back on track together," he said.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, March 22, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Defense said Sunday three ballistic missiles were detected around the capital, as the kingdom and its Gulf neighbours face Iranian strikes in retaliation for US-Israeli attacks. Early Sunday morning, the Saudi Civil Defense issued a warning, before cancelling it seven minutes later after determining the danger had passed. According to the defense ministry, five drones were also intercepted since midnight. Iran has kept up retaliatory attacks on Saudi Arabia and nearby nations in response to US-Israeli strikes that sparked the regional war late last month. The attacks on the oil-rich nations, some of which have targeted energy facilities, have exacerbated concerns of a global energy supply shock.
