"Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st," he added. The news fuelled a rally of more than one percent in US stocks, which had tanked Tuesday on their return from a long weekend. And Asia followed suit, with Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sydney, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei and Manila. Observers said there had been a pick-up in optimism among investors about the "Trump put" in which big losses in stocks would force the president to change course. The advances in Asia were led by tech-heavy markets Tokyo, Taipei and Seoul, with the latter topping 5,000 points for the first time as chip companies enjoyed bumper gains.

PORT SUDAN, Sudan, Jan 22, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Almost three years of war in Sudan have left more than eight million children out of education for nearly 500 days, the NGO Save the Children said Thursday, highlighting one of the world's longest school closures. "More than eight million children -- nearly half of the 17 million of school age -- have gone approximately 484 days without setting foot in a classroom," the children's rights organisation said in a statement. Sudan has been ravaged since April 2023 by a power struggle between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). North Darfur in western Sudan is the country's hardest-hit state: only three percent of its more than 1,100 schools are still functioning. The NGO added that many teachers in Sudanese schools were leaving their jobs due to unpaid salaries.

LONDON, Jan 22, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Britain's upper house of parliament voted Wednesday in favour of banning under?16s from using social media, raising pressure on the government to match a similar ban passed in Australia. Calls have risen across the opposition and within the governing Labour party for the UK to follow Australia, where under?16s have been barred from social media applications since December 10. "This vote begins the process of stopping the catastrophic harm that social media is inflicting on a generation." More than 60 Labour MPs have urged Starmer to back a ban. “The situation there overall, I would tell you guys, being on the inside, was it was a team that just didn’t know how to get along,” Barry stated. Starting with Bradley Beal, it became clear that he never fully bought into operating within a true team structure. But the laissez-faire approach, the mentality of wanting to hoop and nothing else, showed up in exactly what Barry was describing. That disengagement, that singular focus, warped the hierarchy of the team and bled into the locker room. When there is a clear hierarchy behind the scenes, it shows up in how the team plays.
