Hamas blamed an Israeli airstrike for the explosion, while Israel rejected these claims and instead blamed the incident on a misfired rocket launched from Gaza by Hamas. Mark Goldberg, a telecommunications consultant in Toronto, says the CBC lacks an accountability body, which impacts their reporting. Lantsman says that by perpetuating flawed or disproven anti-Israel narratives, the CBC has put entire communities at risk. She says that combined with other perceived biases within the CBC, including a bias against the Conservative Party, that the CBC should be defunded. “A news organization that refuses to take accountability for flawed reporting and contributes to dangerous antisemitism deserves zero dollars of taxpayer funding,” says Lantsman.

A federal jury on Monday found a scuba dive boat captain was criminally negligent in the deaths of 34 people killed in a fire aboard the vessel in 2019, the deadliest maritime disaster in recent U.S. history. The U.S. Attorney's Office said Boylan failed to post the required roving night watch and never properly trained his crew in firefighting. The lack of the roving watch meant the fire was able to spread undetected across the 23-metre boat. Two to three dozen family members of the victims attended each day of the trial in downtown Los Angeles. That case is pending, as are others filed by victims' families against the U.S. Coast Guard for alleged lax enforcement of the roving watch requirement.

PITTSBURGH — Oil sheens up to 18 miles long have repeatedly been reported by an environmental advocacy group on the Monongahela River over the last six months. U.S. Steel spokesperson Amanda Malkowski told Environmental Health News (EHN) the company has worked and communicated with the state’s Department of Environmental Protection and “has thoroughly investigated every report” of oil spills tracked to its facilities. The oil spills are just the latest environmental insult for the waterway, which is one of Pittsburgh’s iconic three rivers, in addition to the Allegheny and the Ohio Rivers, which together make up the Ohio River basin. The way oil spills disperse creates a special headache for investigators in tracking down a source but health advocates say residents aren’t getting the answers — or action — they deserve. During one incident when the group reported an oil sheen on the river but the agency was unable to send out an investigator quickly, Three Rivers Waterkeeper called the EPA’s 24-hour hotline for oil spills in waterways, according to Hulton VanTassel.

The unions representing hundreds of thousands of public sector workers who walked off the job today have announced three more strike days planned for November 21 to 23 unless a deal can be reached before then. About 420,000 public sector workers are striking as part of a one-day walkout meant to put pressure on the Quebec government. (CBC News)Here is an expert from McGill University who can comment on this topic:Barry Eidlin, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology“The Legault government has not seemed very interested thus far in reaching an agreement with public sector workers. There is no progress addressing workplace issues of forced overtime and scheduling, key quality of work-life issues that are essential to addressing labour shortages and providing quality public services. OTTAWA — The NDP and Conservatives want answers about why the federal government signed a vaccine contract with a company financially tied to the tobacco industry, going against its own policies and leading to a $150-million loss. “Giving $150 million away to a corporation and getting nothing in return is bad governance,” NDP Health critic Don Davies said during a House health committee meeting Monday. On Monday, Opposition members of the health committee lambasted the Liberals for their lack of transparency and vowed to launch a study into the full contract. Liberal MP Brendan Hanley accused the Opposition of demanding the study so they can “delay, delay, delay” other studies planned by the health committee. He and his colleague, MP Majid Jowhari, also pushed back on the notion the government “lost” $150 million in the unfulfilled contract with Medicago.
