The bank increased rates 10 times between March 2022 and this July, with inflation peaking at more than 8% last year. Macklem said the BoC would be looking for "clear evidence" inflation is heading toward the bank's 2% target before it would cut interest rates. "If we can get inflation down, interest rates can come down from where they are. They're probably not going back to where they were pre-COVID," Macklem said on the CBC's "The Current" morning radio show. The BoC's key overnight rate was 1.75% at the start of 2020, before being rapidly slashed to 0.25% when the pandemic hit.

OCUFA’s Equity and Social Justice Committee (ESJC) began the 2023-2024 year with events signalling its commitment to a greater action orientation and engagement with current issues impacting members at the committee’s annual Equity Training Workshop and its first meeting of the year this fall. At a session called “Organizing for social justice and equity: Learning from OCUFA’s Contract Faculty Committee (CFC)” at the ESJC’s Annual Equity Training Workshop for new equity representatives, participants heard from OCUFA’s Engagement and Campaigns Coordinator Jordyn Perreault-Laird and Contract Faculty Committee member Kimberly Ellis-Hale (Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty Association) about the CFC’s annual Social Media Day of Action. Over the years, this Social Media Day of Action has helped to build awareness and support from the wider campus community for the issues facing contract faculty. Perreault-Laird and Ellis-Hale shared resources and facilitated a campaign-building exercise, leaving members excited and inspired to consider a similar campaign-based approach to highlighting common equity and social justice issues across campuses. The horrific attack on a gender studies professor and two students at Waterloo University at the end of June was a painful reminder of the challenges of doing equity work.

While politics has become more confrontational over the years, the same cannot be said for talk radio. Justin Tang / Canadian Press Files Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre speaks to reporters in the Foyer of the House of Commons on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, on Oct. 3. Nearly two decades ago some Canadian talk radio executives decided the era of talk radio confrontation was over. They envied the growth of CBC Radio, where rhetorical pugilism wasn’t on the menu. My talk radio career turned into an exercise where I felt my job was to fake excitement about dullards.

In all, MAID deaths accounted for 4.1 per cent of all deaths in Canada in 2022. In 463 cases — 3.5 per cent of the total MAID deaths in 2022 — the person’s natural death was not reasonably foreseeable. On one side, proponents say those with mental illness shouldn’t be discriminated against, or their suffering downplayed; others claim people with mental illness are uniquely vulnerable to the accessibility of assisted suicide. According to the latest annual report, the average age of those who died by MAID in 2022 was 77.

TORONTO, Oct. 24, 2023 /CNW/ - The Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) calls on Conservative Members of Parliament to rescind their motions demanding that senior members of CBC's leadership team appear before House of Commons committees, as it infringes on journalistic independence.
