The Conservatives despise the public broadcaster on ideological grounds. And so, Poilievre has sometimes suggested a Conservative government would maintain funding for the public broadcaster in French, but slash its English component to near zero. Unlike some US news outlets, CBC does not see itself as a cheerleader for one side. CNN, for instance, brands its own coverage of this crisis as “Israel at War”, not War in the Middle East or some other more balanced term. She should answer all questions respectfully, but remind MPs that politicians have no right to interfere in the day-to-day operations of the public broadcaster.

Many people covered by the Public Service Health Care Plan have told CBC stories about challenges getting through to Canada Life about their claims. (CBC - image credit)The president of the Treasury Board Secretariat (TBS) says Canada Life met the standard to win the contract for the Public Service Health Care Plan even though it ended up the only bidder. Around 1.7 million federal workers, retirees and their dependents saw their insurance provider switch from Sun Life to Canada Life on July 1. Anita Anand says the government now needs to ensure Canada Life follows through on its commitment as laid out in its contract. She said the only thing the government can do at this point is enforce the contractual obligations Canada Life committed to when it won the bid.

Well, if you follow the link you can hear part of the song “You Can Close Your Eyes“, a lullaby written by James Taylor and released in 1971, the year I graduated from college. There’s a long Wikipedia entry on it which notes this:It was initially recorded by his sister Kate Taylor for her 1971 album Sister Kate. “You Can Close Your Eyes” along with the entire BBC performance will be available on November 12 as part of JONI MITCHELL ARCHIVES VOL. And I find this version much better than the one above; for one thing, Joni harmonizes better with JT than Carly. It’s lovely: two great singer/songwriters/instrumentalists at their best (Joni doesn’t play guitar on this one).

Retraining Alberta’s oil and gas workers for the solar industry costs far less than you think. Probable futuresThe oil and gas industry has played a crucial part in Alberta’s political structure for decades. However, many factors — including increasing electrification, reduction in renewable energy costs and climate policy — are aligning to annihilate Alberta’s traditional fossil-fuel focused energy industry. This raises a real concern for oil and gas workers’ jobs in the near future. The costs to retrain oil and gas workers could be funded in many ways.

Canada's GDP in August came in at $2.082 trillion during the month. That means there's a good chance that Canada's economy has not grown in any meaningful way since May. The numbers for August were worse than the slight 0.1 per cent uptick that economists were expecting — and worse than the 0.1 per cent uptick that the data agency had forecast in its preliminary estimate. That leaves the third quarter showing no growth and actually a slight contraction according to these monthly GDP numbers, which is well below the Bank of Canada's 0.8 per cent growth projection, said Tiago Figueiredo, an economist with Desjardins. The data agency previously reported that the economy shrank in the April-to-June quarter, so the numbers released Tuesday suggest that Canada's economy hasn't grown for at least two quarters in a row.
