In keeping with his cerebral self, he observes intently, carefully sizing up the precarious structure before him. And to then wrap all that profundity inside a traditional comedy about three bros out for a crawl through seven “Animal House”-style frat parties … well, it’s mind-blowing. Together, they render Sean and Kunie as the kind of buddies who can be philosophical, particularly on race, one minute, and bumbling idiots the next. But what it conveys about an alarming growth of racial animus is deadly serious, if not just deadly.

KKR expands in Asia, armed with $1.1 billion credit fund – Metro US
By Anshuman DagaSINGAPORE (Reuters) -KKR has raised $1.1 billion in its inaugural Asia credit fund that provides debt financing to companies, marking what the U.S. private equity firm said was one of the largest such first-time fundraisings in Asia Pacific. Private credit funds have gained traction in Asia in the last few years as companies tap into alternative sources of funding though banks still account for the bulk of financing. Investors are drawn to credit funds due to potentially higher returns. KKR said in a statement on Wednesday the Asia Credit Opportunities Fund, which saw its final close, received strong support from investors including sovereign wealth funds, insurers and private investment groups. Large private equity funds and investment firms have also launched Asia-dedicated credit funds, with some of them focussed on distressed opportunities.

Free train rides: Kharkiv metro, a bomb shelter for Ukrainians, resumes services
The metro in Ukraine's second city Kharkiv, which has served as a bomb shelter since the Russian invasion at the end of February, resumed services on Tuesday despite sporadic shelling in the north eastern region. "We have restarted the Kharkiv metro and almost all its stations today," mayor Igor Terekhov told journalists. "We decided to relaunch services because we have to relaunch the economy," he said, adding that train rides would be free for the next two weeks. The Kharkiv metro, with 30 stations, has sheltered thousands of residents seeking to escape indiscriminate shelling on the city, which is adjacent to the Russian border. For 28-year-old Artyom Zelensky, who works in a car repair garage, the sight of people riding the metro was jarring.

BlackRock’s iShares to close MSCI Russia, eastern Europe funds due Ukraine – Metro US
By Carolyn CohnLONDON (Reuters) -BlackRock’s iShares will close its MSCI Russia and MSCI Eastern Europe exchange-traded funds, BlackRock said on Friday, joining several other funds which have shut their doors because of the Ukraine conflict. BlackRock had already suspended the funds in early March, shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a “special military operation”, on Feb 24. The MSCI Russia fund had $18 million under management and the MSCI Eastern Europe fund had $108 million, according to BlackRock data. Two other BlackRock funds with Russia exposure remain suspended but have not closed, a BlackRock spokesperson said. A total of $6 billion in assets under management has been frozen in Russian or emerging market funds with Russia exposure since the invasion, Morningstar data shows.

School Allegedly Retaliates Against Florida Student for “Don’t Say Gay” Protest
A Florida high school student who helped organize student walkouts and protests against the state’s “Don’t Say Gay” law says school officials are retaliating against him by barring him from running for class president. Jack Petocz, a 17-year-old junior at Flagler Palm Coast High School, was one of the chief organizers of a series of student-led walkouts that occurred throughout the state to protest the bill. School administrators suspended him following the protests, but later reversed their decision after a petition demanding he not be punished gained more than 7,000 signatures. Now, the school is saying that Petocz can’t run for student elections. Petocz organized protests against the Republican-backed “Parental Rights in Education” law, dubbed by critics as the “Don’t Say Gay” law.

China April property sales post steepest drop since 2006 – Metro US
Property sales in January-April by value fell 29.5% year-on-year, compared with a 22.7% decline in the first three months. More than 80 cities have taken steps to boost demand since the beginning of the year, including subsidies, reductions in mortgage rates and smaller down payments. “With no reopening in sight, a small cut to the lower limit for mortgage rates provides little support to potential first-time home buyers,” Nomura chief China economist Ting Lu said. In April, property investment fell 10.1% year-on-year, the fastest pace since December, compared with the 2.4% decline in March. New construction starts measured by floor area plunged 44.19% from a year earlier, the fastest pace since January-February 2020.

MELBOURNE (Reuters) – A man tried to revive former Australia cricketer Andrew Symonds after he crashed his car in Queensland over the weekend, Australian media reported on Monday. Local resident Waylon Townson told the Nine Network that he had heard the crash and was first at the scene. Symonds’ death occurred with Australian cricket still coming to terms with the passing of all-time greats Rod Marsh and Shane Warne, who both died in March. A swashbuckling batsman and brilliant fielder, Symonds played 238 internationals, including 26 tests, for Australia between 1998-2009. “Roy (Symonds) was never perfect, that was for sure, and he never admitted that he was,” former Australia coach John Buchanan told ABC radio on Monday.

Renault sells Russia’s Avtovaz stake, but leaves room for return – Metro US
Two sources familiar with the situation told Reuters that Renault Russia and the Avtovaz stake were sold for a symbolic one rouble ($0.016) each. The company’s 100% stake in Renault Russia will go to the city of Moscow. Pak said Moskvich production was expected to start this year. The Moscow plant will be renamed Moscow Automobile Factory Moskvich, he said. Renault said in March that it would suspend operations at the Moscow plant amid mounting pressure over its continued presence there since the start of the conflict in Ukraine.

The controversy arose after district officials balked at the inclusion of photos of the student-led protests in the yearbook of Lyman High School, located in the Orlando suburb of Longwood. Students also took to social media to criticize school and district officials, creating a hashtag #stopthestickers to draw attention to their cause. In fact, she argued her decision was consistent with school board policy authorizing prior restraint of school-sponsored publications. She also assured the school board that the smaller stickers could be ordered and added to the yearbooks, which could then be distributed to students in the coming week.
