Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) and Egypt signed a major framework agreement today at the UN Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP27) being held in Sharm El-Sheikh till 18 November, agreeing to work together to study and develop green hydrogen and renewable energy projects in Egypt. The binding agreement provides FFI access and exclusive land rights to study renewable energy resources in Egypt, which would include solar wind. The projects being considered could support a potential capacity of 7,600 MW of renewable energy, which has the potential to produce 330 kilo tonnes per annum of green hydrogen. The PM also stressed the government’s interest in localising renewable energy component manufacturing and noted that energy projects are vital, as they align with the government’s strategy to transform Egypt into a global renewable energy hub. For his part, FFI CEO Mark Hutchinson said the project would bring jobs and economic growth to Egypt.

The Qatar 2022 World Cup is being held for the first time in the Middle East and in an Arab capital after years in which European countries took over the organization of the World Cup, with the exception of a few times when the tournament went to Asia, Africa and AmericBeIN Sports is to be the main carrier, whether open or encrypted channels, for the 2022 World Cup matches. The Qatari Al-Kass TV channel has announced that it has obtained the rights to broadcast the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Egypt’s COP27 is significantfor emphasisingto the international communitythe need toimplement adaptive measures to counter climate change. Each country, including South Korea, should share its efforts and detailed plans to reach the NDC target. In 2019, South Korea successfully hosted the Korea Global Adaptation Week and discussed ways to enhance adaptation to climate change. This year, South Korea implemented a climate change impact assessment to analyse and assess the impact of climate change on national plans and development projects. As a member of the international community, South Korea has a sense of responsibility for developing countries’ climate crises.

The respiratory syncytial virus has raised a state of concern during the past few days in Egypt with its large spread amongst children. In the meantime the global drug manufacturer Pfizer has announced a new vaccine that protects infants and the elderly from the risk of respiratory syncytial virus infection. Respiratory syncytial virus vaccine:With the spread of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections in the US, Pfizer announced the production of a vaccine to fight against the virus that spreads amongst mostly children. The Pfizer vaccine is expected to be released, after obtaining the approval of the US Food and Drug Administration by the end of 2022. If approved, Pfizer’s RSV vaccine will be the first maternal vaccine available to help prevent this common and potentially life-threatening respiratory disease in young infants.

CAIRO - 17 November 2022: Remittances from Egyptian expatriates recorded $20.9 billion during the first eight months of 2022, compared to $21.4 billion during the same months of 2021, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) announced Thursday. In August, the remittances from Egyptian expatriates decreased to $2.2 billion, compared to $2.4 billion during July 2021. The CBE announced earlier that the remittances from Egyptian expatriates increased 1.6 percent during the fiscal year 2021/2022, recording $ 31.9 billion, compared to $31.4 billion during the fiscal year 2020/2021. Furthermore, remittances recorded $2.8 billion during June 2022, compared to about $2.9 billion during June 2021. Previously, the CBE said that the remittances of Egyptians working abroad hit $29.1 billion during the past 11 months.

He explained that the new company’s goal will focus on calling the complementary industries for green energy such as solar panels, electric turbines, and maintenance to localise green industrial technology in Egypt. Additionally, he said that the first stage of production will provide 3-4 GW of green fuel — whether ammonia or hydrogen — from 2023 to 2026. He also announced that seven protocols will be activated during the coming period in addition to preliminary agreements that the authority is expected to witness soon. Egypt aims to become a centre for green fuels, and the economic zone plays a major role in linking these projects to the Sokhna port, and the use of the liquid bulk dock for export. There are other agreements related to greening East Port Said Port and developing a multi-purpose terminal within it.

The promotional campaign aims to promote sustainable tourism in Egypt, targeting the main markets exporting tourism to Egypt, including Germany, the UK, Italy, the US, and the Arab countries, Amr al-Kady, CEO of the Egyptian General Authority for Tourism Activation, said. This is to highlight the efforts of the modern Egyptian state in preserving the environment and transforming into sustainable green tourism. Suzan Mustafa, Director General of the Tourism Promotion Department at the authority explained that the campaign will start by publishing a group of short promotional film. These short documentary style films are on various Egyptian tourist destinations, highlighting distinguished environmental diversity and what distinguishes each region in Egypt.

Planning Minister Hala el Saeed inaugurated on Thursday “Solutions Day” in the presence of Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli and with the participation of Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, Environment Minister Yasmin Fouad and UN Climate Change High Level Champion Mahmoud Mohieldin. “Solutions Day” comes as part of COP 27 held in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh. Saeed pointed out to the reports of the intentional government authority concerned with climate change which asserted the importance of finding bold, ambitious and creative solutions to handle the climate change and achieve the goals of UN for climate change and Paris Agreement. CAIRO – 17 November 2022: Minister of Environment Yasmin Fouad stated in a phone-in Wednesday that Egypt had included biodiversity in the COP 27 agenda – for the first time – as it is necessary to mitigate climate change through natural ways. The minister added that Egypt – COP 27 president - would continue to observe the implementation of climate pledges until the UAE assumed the summit's presidency late in 2023. Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad said Sunday that the international climate summit, COP27, in Sharm el Sheikh has so far reflected a “different” image of Egypt and its ability to organize such big world events. She talked about how Sharm el Sheikh turned into a green city with many projects to be implemented, thus securing future jobs for youth in the coming stage. Pavilions organized in the blue and green zones of the Sharm el Sheikh conference are double the number organized during previous gatherings since 2015, said a proud Fouad.

He also highlighted his country’s keenness on the success of the UN Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP27) being held in Sharm El-Sheikh until 18 November and its successful outcome. For his part, Shoukry thanked the UAE official for his interest in communicating with the conference presidency and working to ensure that the Sharm El-Sheikh conference achieves its goals. He also reviewed the various topics on the agenda, expressing his hope that the coming days will see more rapprochement between countries on these topics. Finally, he stressed Egypt’s constant keenness and readiness to coordinate with the UAE on the COP28 to ensure its success.

CAIRO – 16 November 2022: Public Prosecutor Hamada al-Sawy inaugurated Wednesday the second annual meeting of the Egypt-chaired Association of Arab Public Prosecutors, hosted by Saudi Arabia for the year 2022. Sawy stressed in his speech that the association's purpose is the elimination of hindrances crippling cooperation between its members, and that ways of communications had already been devised, enabling the fulfillment of relevant international and regional commitments. Another goal of the association is sharpening the skills of members, especially in the areas of evidence collection, judicial prosecution, international cooperation, tracking and confiscation of criminal revenues. That is why training sessions were held in 2021 and 2022 for members of Arab public prosecution authorities. A workshop was held on the meeting's sidelines, having as title "Financial Fraud Crimes and Their Relation to Cybersecurity."

Sharm El-Sheikh – Nigerian Minister of Environment Muhammad Abdullah revealed on Tuesday that his country is seeking more cooperation with Egypt, especially in the energy sector, pointing out that there are advanced talks with the Egyptian side and meetings that are scheduled to be held during the coming period to further cooperation. Abdullah added that his country will participate in launching the African carbon market and cooperate with Egypt in this aspect, especially as it sees promising opportunities in this market. This came in an interview with Daily News Egypt on the side-lines of the UN Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP27) that is being held in Sharm El-Sheikh till 18 November. He added that his country plans to transition from traditional energy to clean energy by 2035, especially in light of Africa’s pursuit of growth, specifically in the industrial fields. He noted that this is the reason behind calling the climate conference in Egypt the ‘implementation conference.’Additionally, he praised Egypt’s hosting of the climate conference on behalf of Africa, along with its organisation and management of the event.

Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Ambroise Fayolle revealed on Wednesday that the share of the bank’s investment that went to climate and environmental action projects rose to 51% in 2021. “The Bank is transforming faster than anyone could have expected to meet our climate commitments,” he added. During his speech before the 5th High-Level Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Finance organised by the UN Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP27) that is being held in Sharm El-Sheikh till 18 November, Fayolle mentioned that in 2021, the Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) provided $82bn for climate action globally, out of which $51bn was for climate finance in low- and middle-income countries. Fayolle further added that MDBs have a key role to play, stressing that working in partnership is the only solution. “We are supporting clients so that they better understand climate risks and build resilient, low-carbon, and inclusive infrastructure, cities, and businesses.

CAIRO -16 November 2022: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has issued directives to officials to disburse additional payments to the families of the martyrs through the Martyrs Honoring Fund. During a meeting Wednesday with the fund board chairman major general El Sayyed El Ghaly, the president ordered the fund officials to count the families of martyrs who fell in wars since 1948 to enable them to benefit from services offered by the fund such as education, health and social care. Presidential spokesman Bassm Rady said the president reviewed the annual reports of the activities of honoring the martyrs in coordination with the ministries concerned with the aim of offering the best benefits for the families of the martyrs, as well as disbursing additional sums of money for the families of the martyrs and the wounded.
