Boeing may be subject to criminal prosecution after the Department of Justice (DOJ) accused it of violating the terms of a 2021 settlement agreement. The government is still deciding “how it will proceed in this matter,” and has given Boeing until June 13 to respond. Advertisement“We believe that we have honored the terms of that agreement, and look forward to the opportunity to respond to the Department on this issue,” a Boeing spokesperson said. Boeing thought it had put its 737 MAX problems behind it, with executives hoping for sunnier horizons for the aircraft manufacturer. So far, 2024 hasn’t panned out that way — starting with the blowout of a door plug on an Alaska Airlines flight just five days into the year.

Qatar Airways plans to buy a stake in an airline based in southern Africa as part of its wider plans to grow its route network across the continent following partnerships with Kigali-based RwandAir and Morocco's flagship carrier Royal Air Maroc. An announcement of the deal could be made in the next two to three weeks, Qatar Airways' chief executive Badr Al Meer said at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha on Wednesday. While Mr Al Meer did not identify the target of Qatar Airways' equity stake investment, he said southern Africa has just two or three airlines to pick from. A series of drone attacks that occurred last Sunday in the Kawot and Molale districts of the North Shewa area, in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, caused the death of numerous civilians. The attack, according to the same sources, caused four victims, while five others were injured, including three teachers and a senior school assistant. Other sources cited by broadcaster “Deutsche Welle” indicate that the death toll at the school may have been higher, with seven teachers killed according to some eyewitnesses. In recent weeks several press sources had reported that Ethiopia is deploying an additional number of troops along the road that connects the northern city of Humera to the Eritrean city of Omhajer. In the event of Ethiopian intervention to dismantle the provisional Amhara government in the west, the sources note, the Amhara militias could seek an escape route from Eritrea or obtain military support from Eritrea.

A new twist in the safety crisis engulfing Boeing could see the airline prosecuted over the 737 MAX 8 crashes in 2018 and 2019 that left 346 people dead. Then, Boeing agreed to pay $2.5bn to resolve the investigation into its conduct, compensate victims' relatives and overhaul its compliance practices. The terms of that deal - known as a deferred prosecution agreement - were due to expire in January this year but, two days beforehand, a Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft operated by Alaska Airlines suffered a mid-air panel blowout. By Evan Perez, CNN(CNN) — The US Justice Department on Tuesday notified Boeing that it breached terms of its 2021 agreement in which the company avoided criminal charges for two fatal 737 Max crashes. The earlier deal had resolved a fraud investigation related to the company’s development of its 737 Max aircraft. Under its deferred prosecution agreement from January 2021, Boeing paid $2.5 billion in penalties and promised to improve its safety and compliance protocols. In April 2023, Boeing announced its supplier used a “non-standard manufacturing process,” delaying deliveries of the 737 Max. In March, the FAA identified more potential safety issues with the engines of the 737 Max and 787 Dreamliner.

The news comes after reports that the DOJ had been investigating Boeing’s compliance with the agreement in recent months following the January in-flight blow-out of an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9’s door-plug. “For failing to fulfill completely the terms of and obligations under the [agreement], Boeing is subject to prosecution by the United States” for criminal violations, the letter adds. “The government is determining how it will proceed in this matter.”Boeing denies it violated the agreement but commits to co-operating with the DOJ. Boeing added MCAS to the 737 Max to counter the jet’s tendency, due to its larger engines, to pitch nose-up during certain circumstances. The company in 2021 agreed to pay $2.5 billion and to ensure its compliance with federal laws in exchange for the DOJ deferring prosecution of the criminal charges.

"For failing to fulfill completely the terms of and obligations under the DPA, Boeing is subject to prosecution by the United States for any federal criminal violation," Justice Department officials wrote in the letter. The letter argued that investigators are no longer bound by the 2021 agreement and are "not limited" in their probe into the aircraft manufacturing giant. Last month, families of some of the 737 Max crash victims met with Justice Department officials for an update on the case against Boeing. Robert A. Clifford, another attorney representing family members of victims of one of the 737 crashes, said in a statement, "This is a way for Boeing to be held criminally responsible in court. The Justice Department declined to comment further when reached by CBS News.
