Professor of Geology and Water Resources at the Cairo University Abbas Sharaky announced Saturday that Lake Victoria achieved the highest water level this year in its history. During a phone interview with “al-Hadath al-Youm” satellite channel, Sharaky said that the lake exceeded its highest level by about five cm, noting that “The rain regime in the sources of the Nile River is in a great miracle … all months of the year have rain.”“God wanted Egypt’s share to remain in his protection and care,” he remarked. Sharaky noted that the level of rain will be high in Ethiopia during July, which will reflect on Egypt’s water revenues and reduce the amount of storage damage in the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). The High Dam guarantees protection for Egypt from Ethiopia’s releases of excess water, he noted, assuring that Egypt has all the water it needs during Ethiopia’s storage period. An increase in Lake Victoria by one cm means an increase of one billion cubic meters of water, the professor said, adding that the lake has increased by about 50 cm within the past period.

The abuse and hate speech are prompting many Ethiopian women to withdraw from public life, online and off, according to the recent research. Over 78% of the women interviewed reported feelings of fear or anxiety after experiencing online abuse. “This data can be used by human rights advocates, women’s rights advocates, in their advocacy,” she said. ADDIS ABABA, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Tullow Oil (LSE: TLW.L - news) said on Tuesday it has started talks with the Ethiopian government to extend its exploration licence, even though only two of four wells it drilled in the past two years have shown "encouraging" hydrocarbon finds. Tullow said it will press on in Ethiopia. "We are engaged in licence extension discussions ... and we are currently examining the substantial volume of drilling and seismic data collected to decide our future exploration plans for the southern Ethiopian acreage." Tullow said it has also suspended drilling activities and has reduced staff in the Horn of Africa nation. Big oil and gas finds along Africa's eastern coast are propelling an exploration boom.

Provider says complaints are unfounded following considerable USD 4mln discountEthiopian television broadcasters are in an uproar over “unjust” satellite transponder lease fees charged by Ethiosat, a communication satellite platform launched by the government in 2017. A petition to the Office of the Prime Minister from the Ethiopian Media Council, a media lobby group, a month ago has yet to garner a response. Ethiosat was established by the Information Network Security Agency (INSA) in partnership with SES, a satellite telecoms network based in Luxembourg. No less than 70 broadcasters are paying more than USD 6 million collectively in lease fees each year – an amount the lobby group describes as unfair. Menen argues that Ethiosat and SES are not non-profits, and cannot lower rates for broadcasters any further.

Speaking at their winner's press conference, Swiss artist Nemo addressed controversies that have seen Eurovision week become unusually tumultuous, with questions over the last-minute disqualification of Dutch entrant Joost Klein, as well as protests over Israel's participation. Asked about the difficulties, Nemo said: "This whole experience was really intense, and not pleasant all the way. Nemo also said they had to "smuggle" a nonbinary flag into the event because "Eurovison said no," adding: "Maybe Eurovision needs a little fixing too every now and then." Long-standing restrictions on what flags are permitted at Eurovision have also seen artists and fans prevented from displaying the Palestinian flag at this year's event. The musician, 24, said they were "incredibly proud" to be the contest's first nonbinary winner, adding that queer people "need to be heard and need to be understood."

It has a single God known as "Bondye," Creole for "Good God," and more than 1,000 spirits known as the lwa — some that aren't always benevolent. During Vodou ceremonies, lwa are offered treats ranging from papayas and coffee to popcorn, lollipops and cheese puffs. Vodou is attracting more believers given the surge in gang violence and government inaction, said Cecil Elien Isac, a fourth-generation oungan. "Until the 1920s, Haitian Vodou was generally regarded as a string of superstitions, witchcraft and ritual cannibalism," Clorméus wrote. It's unknown how many people currently practice Vodou in Haiti, but there's a popular saying: "Haiti is 70% Catholic, 30% Protestant and 100% Vodou."

- Advertisement -The study showcases the mental health impacts and offline violence resulting from online abuse. Over 78 percent of the interviewed women reported feelings of fear and anxiety after experiencing online abuse. Disturbingly, offline violence, including physical assaults and arrests, often follows online abuse, with some women having to flee the country for their safety. The research further reveals that online abuse against women in Ethiopia is normalized and accepted, making it difficult for victims to seek support. CIR calls for urgent action to address the online abuse of women in Ethiopia.
