The seeds were provided by FAO with funding from OCHA's Central Emergency Response Fund for anticipatory action to support people dealing with the region's longest drought in several decades. The humanitarian community acted earlier thanks to OCHA piloting an anticipatory action framework. The OCHA-managed Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) provided US$20 million to humanitarian partners to reduce the drought’s impact on more than 900,000 people. “The Ethiopia anticipatory action pilot demonstrated that if we act earlier, people’s lives will be better,” said Joyce Msuya, the Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator. “In 2024, drought is once again driving millions of people to suffer... we have the evidence, now we must scale.”

The former president of Somalia region, Abdi Mohamoud Omar, commonly known as ‘Abdi Iley’, was released from prison, his lawyer said. Abdi Iley was arrested in August 2018 in Addis Ababa, shortly after stepping down as the region’s president, and accused of inciting violence in his volatile region. He was freed on Thursday after the prosecution dropped the charges, confirmed his lawyer, Eskinder Gezahegn. Abdi Iley, who held authority over the Somali region for years before Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power, has been implicated in numerous human rights violations, instances of violence, and mismanagement of state resources in the region. He allegedly commanded his special paramilitary Leyu forces to engage in acts of kidnapping, torture, and sexual abuse against political rivals and critics.

MILWAUKEE — It's been an active Wednesday in downtown with President Biden in the area. "It's been very quiet," Diane Wilson told TMJ4. This isn't the first time the store owner has seen a sitting president make their way through downtown. That intensity in detours this time around slowed down business for her neighbors across the street, too. Both Wilson and Bekele say, that despite the slow business, having presidents come to town and put downtown Milwaukee on the map is great for the city.

An annual Threat Assessment Report released by the US Intelligence Community warns that territorial disputes could rekindle fighting in Tigray. “Ethiopia is undergoing multiple, simultaneous internal conflicts, heightening interethnic tension and the risk of atrocities against civilians,” it reads. The statement acknowledges the conflict in the Amhara region before alluding to ongoing tensions between the federal government and the TPLF and Tigray Interim Administration over territory claims in Ethiopia’s north. “While the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement in November 2022 between the Ethiopian Government and the Tigrayans ended a two-year war, unresolved territorial issues could lead to a resumption of conflict,” reads the report.
