Somalia: How Hassan Sheikh was 'harassed' in EthiopiaMOGADISHU, Somalia - A diplomatic spat is looming in the Horn of Africa with a series of unprecedented incidents during the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, in what opens a conversion about territorial integrity and sovereignty of other countries. In a 13-minute press conference, Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud lamented what he termed as 'harassment' and 'intimidation' by the Ethiopian government, sending a stern warning about future relations between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa. According to Hassan Sheikh, his entourage was denied access out of the Hotel room in Addis Ababa, forcing him to seek assistance from Djibouti President Omar Guelleh. The team used Guelleh's vehicles, Hassan Sheikh said in a statement. However, the government of Ethiopia has since denied the claims, noting that Hassan Sheikh was given a befitting reception as Somalia’s head of state.

Ethiopia has said Somali leader Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his delegation on Saturday tried to access the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa with unauthorised weapons. To Somali officials who spoke to us, the commotion at the entrance of the AU headquarters was not just a humiliation of their president but also risked their leader’s personal safety. Nevertheless, Mohamud’s security detail quickly contacted the IGAD Chairperson and Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh to engage Ethiopian leaders to allow the Somali leader to attend the summit. President Guelleh came to Mohamud’s rescue. Red Sea CRISISRelations between Somalia and Ethiopia took a nosedive earlier this year when Addis Ababa signed a secret deal with the neighbouring secessionist Northern part of Somalia known as Somaliland to access the Red Sea.

Ethiopia-Somalia tensions boil over at African UnionAFP, ADDIS ABABATensions between Horn of Africa rivals Ethiopia and Somalia on Saturday boiled over on the opening day of an African Union (AU) summit in Addis Ababa. The two neighbors — already at odds over a controversial maritime pact — locked horns over Somalia’s claims that Ethiopian security tried to block Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud from accessing the summit venue. The 55-nation AU, which is headquartered in Addis Ababa, has long been criticized for being ineffectual and taking little decisive action in the face of numerous conflicts and power grabs. Mohamud told reporters he had been blocked by Ethiopian security agents as he tried to enter a summit venue, a second time while accompanying Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh. Mogadishu has accused Addis Ababa of violating its sovereignty over a January maritime deal with Somaliland, which declared independence in 1991 in a move not recognized by the international community.

Ethiopia has been gradually developing its renewable energy potential in recent years, adding wind, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric capacity. In the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia is home to abundant renewable energy sources, with the potential for massive green energy generation if supported by greater investment in the sector. Ethiopia has the potential to generate more than 60,000 MW of electric power from hydroelectric, wind, solar, and geothermal sources. Despite this strong potential, Ethiopia has struggled to tap into its natural energy sources due to a lack of investment. At present, Africa produces just 1 GW of geothermal energy, which is half that of Europe.

“While we are halfway to implementing the 2030 Silencing the Guns in Africa strategy, the continued emergence of areas of tension raises pressing questions. The Minister noted that despite the various challenges linked “to our institutional capacity, the PSC remains actively involved in all issues relating to peace and security on the Continent”. Referring to the AU’s PSC report, Bourita said that over the course of 2023, the PSC had demonstrated positive dynamism, holding a total of 61 meetings and producing 58 significant conclusions. The current situation in Africa gives cause for legitimate concern, characterized by persistent security challenges, often of an asymmetrical nature, noted the Minister, adding that no region in Africa today is spared from sources of instability. This undertaking also requires better coordination and synergies between the AU, the UN Security Council and Africa’s partners, on the one hand, and between the AU and the Regional Economic Communities, on the other, the Minister stressed.

Ethiopia and the breakaway region of Somaliland signed a deal last month, leasing Mogadishu the land to build a port and naval base. Somalia accused Ethiopia on Saturday of trying to annex part of the country's territory by signing a sea access deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud told reporters as he arrived for an African Union (AU) summit in Addis Ababa that Ethiopia and Somaliland had signed an agreement that is "nothing more than annexing part of Somalia to Ethiopia, and changing the borders of Somalia." Was Mohamud blocked from entering AU summit? While Somaliland is largely stable, Somalia has witnessed decades of civil war and an Islamist insurgency by the Al-Shabab militant group.

Trump, meanwhile, has been working to appeal to the blue-collar and union voters who were critical to his victory in 2016. But Trump was again most focused on his grievances, opening with a 15-minute screed about the criminal and civil cases against him. Trump lost the county to Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Biden in 2020, both times by eight percentage points. The remaining 39 will be distributed by precinct delegates at a Michigan GOP state convention on March 2. Trump’s visit came as the state’s GOP has been in turmoil, amid competing claims on the chairmanship and financial crisis.

Somalia has condemned what it calls "a provocative attempt by the Ethiopian government," claiming that Ethiopian security forces tried to block Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud from accessing the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, a government statement said Saturday. "This action breaches all diplomatic and international protocols and, most critically, the established traditions of the African Union. "Given that Ethiopia hosts the African Union headquarters, its leadership and government have an obligation to treat all African leaders equally," the Somali government statement said. She said the Somali delegation had declined the security offered by Ethiopia and tried to enter a venue with their weapons. "The Somali delegation security attempted to enter the AUC [African Union Commission] premises with weapons, which was blocked off by AUC security."
