Bend-based ReachAnother Foundation launching first pediatric neurosurgery center in Ethiopia
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- In a big step toward transforming pediatric health care in Ethiopia, the Central Oregon-based nonprofit organization, ReachAnother Foundation, is spearheading the launch of the first stand-alone, state-of-the-art Pediatric Neurosurgery Center in that African country. “This project is a significant undertaking for ReachAnother Foundation, and it marks a historic moment in Ethiopian health care,” added Yakob S. Ahmed, ReachAnother Ethiopian Country Director. “The Pediatric Neurosurgery Center at Zewditu Hospital will be a beacon of hope for children who, until now, have faced critical challenges in accessing specialized care. The Pediatric Neurosurgery Center at Zewditu Memorial Hospital aims to change this by providing comprehensive care exclusively tailored for pediatric patients. Since 2009, ReachAnother has funded surgery for over 11,000 children, and today it partners with eight hospitals across Ethiopia to develop Centers of Excellence in Pediatric Neurosurgery.

The corroborated reports of the extrajudicial killings have generated sharp criticism internationally. Yesterday, the British Embassy in Addis Abeba expressed concern, stating, “Reported killings of civilians in Merawi are disturbing and follow reports of other violations. Ethiopia To Ban Petrol And Diesel Car Imports As The Country Combats Financial Struggles
The African nation of Ethiopia recently announced that it plans to ban the import of petrol and diesel cars. He further said that efforts were being made to set up charging stations for electric cars. The new policy aims to restrict foreign exchange resources for buying new internal combustion engine (ICE) cars and also reduce crude oil imports in the country. The ban on the import of ICE vehicles will make a dent in the plans of existing automakers operating in the market. These plants are equipped to make ICE and electric vehicles.

Addis summit raises questions about AU’s muted stance on Ethiopia rifts

How Tom Suozzi Won Back a Seat for the Democrats
Democrat Tom Suozzi won back New York’s third congressional district seat in yesterday’s special election to replace George Santos, defeating Republican Mazi Pilip by a greater-than-expected margin of around eight points. The Pilip campaign remained insular — wedded to a campaign strategy that worked for her county legislative campaign in Great Neck and not the district as a whole. By the end of the campaign, Suozzi had a 35 percent advantage over Pilip with Asian voters. His team and aligned PACs flooded Asian voters with handwritten postcards, phone calls, and text messages. Asian voters who had not yet taken part in early voting were sent repeated text messages to turn out at the voting booth.

Ethiopian-Israeli-American falls short in securing congressional seat
In a special congressional election to fill the vacated seat of disgraced Republican George Santos, Ethiopian-born Israeli-American Mazi Pilip, running as a Republican, lost on Tuesday to three-term congressman Tom Suozzi, as Democrats picked up a critical House seat in New York’s 3rd congressional district. The race, won by Suozzi by a larger-than-expected margin, is looked at by many as a bellwether of November’s general election. Rep. Nick LaLota, a Republican first-term U.S. House member from New York’s 1st congressional district, insisted Pilip did not spend the campaign on the defense. She also had a short campaign through which to catch up with Suozzi on name recognition. Suozzi will need to defend his seat again in November, with the special election held to fill out the remainder of Santos’s term.

Ethiopia, UNIDO ink $28m deal to boost textile, garment industry

In 2017, UNIDO signed a € 2.5m project with Italy aimed at capacity building and job creation for youth and women in the textile sector in migration-prone areas of Ethiopia. The project also built the capacities of entrepreneurs and workers within the textile sector and strengthened the know-how of the Ministry of Industry of Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Human Rights Commission says 45 civilians killed by government forces in Amhara region
The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) claimed on Tuesday that federal security forces have killed at least 45 civilians in Ethiopia’s Amhara region. The independent state body also alleged that the civilians had been killed for being supposedly affiliated with the ethnic Amhara armed group known as Fano. Fano emerged as a resistance group in 2015, claiming to fight against the alleged genocide happening against the Amhara people. After the end of the civil war with TPLF, the government headed by Ethiopian President Abiy Ahmed failed to continue their alliance with Fano. The US also called for an investigation into the alleged murder of civilians in the Amhara region on Friday.

Families continue to flee capital as new bout of gang violence grips Haiti
Haiti which is recovering from a recent spate of violent demonstrations demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister, grapples with violence once again. Hundreds of families have been steadily leaving their homes under heavy shootouts since Sunday as rival gangs fight for control of the capital Port-au-Prince. Onne Monday (Feb. 12), a fresh bout of gang violence had driven new families out of their homes. "They burned houses we don't know if our house was burned. “At least 806 people, not involved in the in the violent exchanges taking place, were killed, injured, or kidnapped in January," Marta Hurtado said.
