Legesse Tulu, Minister of State for Communication Services (Photo: FBC)Addis Abeba – The Ethiopian government has denied reports of recent extrajudicial killings by state security forces in the town of Merawi, located in the Amhara region. The report stated that civilians were targeted based on suspicion of “supporting the armed Fano group.”According to EHRC, the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, pending further investigation. The corroborated reports of the extrajudicial killings have generated sharp criticism internationally. Yesterday, the British Embassy in Addis Abeba expressed concern, stating, “Reported killings of civilians in Merawi are disturbing and follow reports of other violations. Ethiopia Coffee face Hambericho Durame in the hope of achieving a fourth straight win and Adama hosts Ethiopian Insurance in the second game. Both Ethiopia Premier League 15th week matches come up at the Adama Science and Technology University Stadium. The other match of the day offers so much with the in-form Ethiopia Coffee odds on favourites to earn their fourth straight win when they play against the bottom siders, Hambericho Durame. Ethiopia Coffee have gone through the last seven fixtures undefeated, with five wins and two draws. Hambericho Durame look like they won't escape relegation from their poor run unless by some stroke of magic, they begin to win games, but Ethiopia Coffee looks like the wrong fixture at this time.

The African nation of Ethiopia recently announced that it plans to ban the import of petrol and diesel cars. He further said that efforts were being made to set up charging stations for electric cars. The new policy aims to restrict foreign exchange resources for buying new internal combustion engine (ICE) cars and also reduce crude oil imports in the country. The ban on the import of ICE vehicles will make a dent in the plans of existing automakers operating in the market. These plants are equipped to make ICE and electric vehicles.

From Thursday, African leaders will gather in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, home of the African Union (AU), for the continental body’s annual summit. This week, the Ethiopian Human Rights Council said “at least 45 civilians” had been killed by federal troops in Amhara. This, despite a history of domestic turmoil: for example mass arrests of street hawkers and the homeless in Addis Ababa, to keep out of view of visiting dignitaries and release after their departure, has gone unnoticed. Strategic alignmentIndeed Ethiopia has often gotten a pass from the international community despite several human rights violations and questionable foreign policies. “The government had expressed its displeasure with the AU’s inquiry, calling it ‘regrettable’ and ‘unilateral’,” explains journalist and Addis Standard magazine’s founder Tsedale Lemma.

In a stark warning, the United Nations chief said on Tuesday that the combined impact of climate chaos and food crises are increasing threats to global peace. Speaking at the UN Security Council in New York, Antonio Guterres said climate disasters have a negative impact on food production which kindles social unrest. “A global food crisis is creating a hellscape of anger and heartache for many of the world's poorest people. And the climate crisis is accelerating with the deadly force, and last year was the hottest ever.”“Both of these facts undermine peace. “In many places, climate disasters add another dimension.

Democrat Tom Suozzi won back New York’s third congressional district seat in yesterday’s special election to replace George Santos, defeating Republican Mazi Pilip by a greater-than-expected margin of around eight points. The Pilip campaign remained insular — wedded to a campaign strategy that worked for her county legislative campaign in Great Neck and not the district as a whole. By the end of the campaign, Suozzi had a 35 percent advantage over Pilip with Asian voters. His team and aligned PACs flooded Asian voters with handwritten postcards, phone calls, and text messages. Asian voters who had not yet taken part in early voting were sent repeated text messages to turn out at the voting booth.

In a special congressional election to fill the vacated seat of disgraced Republican George Santos, Ethiopian-born Israeli-American Mazi Pilip, running as a Republican, lost on Tuesday to three-term congressman Tom Suozzi, as Democrats picked up a critical House seat in New York’s 3rd congressional district. The race, won by Suozzi by a larger-than-expected margin, is looked at by many as a bellwether of November’s general election. Rep. Nick LaLota, a Republican first-term U.S. House member from New York’s 1st congressional district, insisted Pilip did not spend the campaign on the defense. She also had a short campaign through which to catch up with Suozzi on name recognition. Suozzi will need to defend his seat again in November, with the special election held to fill out the remainder of Santos’s term.

The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) claimed on Tuesday that federal security forces have killed at least 45 civilians in Ethiopia’s Amhara region. The independent state body also alleged that the civilians had been killed for being supposedly affiliated with the ethnic Amhara armed group known as Fano. Fano emerged as a resistance group in 2015, claiming to fight against the alleged genocide happening against the Amhara people. After the end of the civil war with TPLF, the government headed by Ethiopian President Abiy Ahmed failed to continue their alliance with Fano. The US also called for an investigation into the alleged murder of civilians in the Amhara region on Friday.
