The U.S. Government through its United States Agency for International Development (USAID) officially launched a new, five-year Disaster Risk Management (DRM) project October 15 at Arba Minch University. USAID’s DRM project aims to build Ethiopia’s resilience by strengthening disaster risk management planning, enhancing coordination across sectors, improving resource mobilization, and reducing the impacts of crises. In addition, the program emphasizes gender inclusion in emergencies, boosts private sector engagement, and empowers local organizations to take an active role in disaster management. To address these vulnerabilities, USAID’s DRM project focuses on building resilience and strengthening coordination among local, regional, and national stakeholders. USAID estimates that anticipatory DRM can reduce the impact of disasters for approximately 14 million of the most vulnerable Ethiopians.

A dozen states, including Texas, have new laws limiting or banning DEI policies at their public universities. The plea deal states that the Justice Department would select the person with “input” from Boeing. A Justice Department lawyer said the provision doesn’t mean that a less-qualified person would be picked, only that the government will consider all candidates. He asked the Justice Department and Boeing to respond in writing by Oct. 25. Possibly he wants to delay the decision, but that is an unsupported hunch.”The Justice Department and Boeing said they would comply with the judge’s order and declined to comment further.

Amhara Society Network (ASN)Washington DCWhile global attention is focused on crises such as Gaza and Ukraine, the Amhara region of Ethiopia faces an equally dire humanitarian catastrophe. UNICEF and WHO report that the suspension of immunization campaigns and health services has created a child health crisis, particularly in conflict-affected areas. Since the health service needs emergency response, there is a critical need for emergency health services, such as setting up mobile clinics and establishing satellite healthcare services to reach the affected populations. The destruction of over 4,000 schools in the Amhara region has further marginalized students, increasing their vulnerability to exploitation and violence. The Amhara Society Network continues to appeal to international humanitarian organizations for urgent, coordinated intervention to assist those suffering due to the war waged by Abiy Ahmed’s government on the Amhara region.
