The three leaders agreed to improve regional stability as Somalia battles with the al-Shabab armed group. The presidents of Somalia, Eritrea, and Egypt have agreed to boost cooperation for regional security amid heightened tensions in the Horn of Africa. In a statement released by the Eritrean information ministry, the three leaders agreed to bolster ties and improve regional stability, and the “unequivocal respect for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the countries of the region”. For years, Egypt and Ethiopia have been in dispute over Addis Ababa’s construction of a vast hydroelectric dam on the Nile River. Eritrea has also had issues with Ethiopia despite Eritrean troops having backed the Ethiopian government forces against the 2020-2022 war against the Tigrayan forces.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi arrived today in Asmara, Eritrea, to meet with Eritrean President Isasias Afwerki. Egypt, according to the same source, also reiterated its opposition to Ethiopia's military presence on the Red Sea. In addition to the common Ethiopian threat, the thaw in relations between Cairo and Mogadishu's historic ally: Turkey, has also brought the positions of Egypt and Somalia closer. A thaw that was sanctioned by the recent visit to Ankara by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi (the first since 2014). The talks between Egypt and Eritrea follow a surprise visit to Asmara in August by Egyptian intelligence chief Kamal Abbas, who is very close to President Al Sisi, accompanied by Foreign Minister Abdelatty.

Photo Credit: Michael ZekriThe National Library of Israel (NLI), the Ethiopian Jewry Heritage Center, and the Orit Guardians program at Tel Aviv University, have announced a new digitization project to scan and make available the rare holy books and manuscripts of the Beta Israel community. Until now, most of these items were held by the community’s Kesim (clergy) in private homes, or in Beta Israel synagogues, but were not accessible to the public at large. Scanning is being conducted jointly by NLI and the Ethiopian Jewry Heritage Center. It was donated by the Beta Israel to the Library in 2016. Naftali Avraham, Director General of the Ethiopian Jewry Heritage Center, says that documenting and preserving the Ethiopian Jewish bookshelf is one of the Center’s primary objectives.

The COI has previously alleged that both Israel and Hamas committed war crimes in the early stages of the Gaza war, and that Israel’s actions also constituted crimes against humanity because of the immense civilian losses. The term is reserved for the most serious international crimes knowingly committed as part of a widespread or systematic attack against civilians. The COI has accused Israel of obstructing its work and preventing investigators from accessing both Israel and the Palestinian territories. Sometimes, the evidence gathered by such UN-mandated bodies has formed the basis for war crimes prosecutions and could be drawn on by the International Criminal Court.

NAIROBI: The leaders of Egypt, Eritrea and Somalia pledged Thursday to work together on regional security at an unprecedented summit held against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the Horn of Africa. Thursday’s summit in Asmara signalled the forging of a new regional alliance in the Horn, with Ethiopia — Africa’s second-most populous nation — left out in the cold. Relations have soured dramatically between Ethiopia and neighboring Somalia, which was enraged by the Somaliland maritime deal and has since moved closer to Addis Ababa’s longtime regional rival Cairo. Relations between Addis Ababa and Asmara have also been deteriorating recently, even though Eritrean troops backed Ethiopian government forces in the brutal 2020-2022 war against Tigrayan rebels. Analysts say Eritrea was not happy with the peace agreement between Addis Ababa and Asmara’s longstanding enemy the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), and still has troops in parts of Tigray.

Ethio Telecom will be the first company to list on the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX), the country’s new bourse kicks off next week. The revelation was made by Brook Taye, CEO of the state investment arm Ethiopia Investment Holdings, to Reuters. Ethio Telecom enjoyed a virtual monopoly until the government granted a license to Kenya’s Safaricom in 2022 as part of ongoing economic reforms to foster competition by privatising previously protected sectors. In September, Ethio Telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamru said that the telco will aim for 75% growth over the next year by enhancing its existing services, launching new offerings, and expanding enterprise solutions. “We’re seeing banks in our neighbourhood looking at Ethiopia, we’re seeing North African banks looking at Ethiopia, and some of household banks in West Africa also looking at Ethiopia,” Taye added.
