Community-based approachIt all starts with consultations with the local community about the need for the restoration work. “When we first learned about the restoration project after organizing into an association, we had a mix of hope and doubt,” recalls Gutema Mieso, chairman of Fike Lelisa youth association. Through extensive terracing and protecting the fertile soil from water erosion, the land gradually began to regenerate with grass. After five years, Abijata-Shalla National Park has seen significant improvements, with increased forest cover, reduced soil erosion and improved water levels in Lake Abijata. He says the restoration program has also created new livelihoods for community members directly involved in the restoration.

There have been allegations in Ethiopia, including by the government, that Egypt has been behind Ethiopian rebel groups one way or another. Egypt has been advancing “historical rights over the Nile” narrative based on the 1959 agreement to which Ethiopia was not a party. Ethiopia, contributing about 85 percent of the nile water flowing to the lower riparian countries, was given no water share. Ethiopia has been negotiating from a point of view of equitable use of the water rejecting “historical right” which Egyptian President reframed as “Preservation” of water rights. “The binding agreement” Egypt is pushing for is compromising Ethiopia’s sovereignty and its future use of the water.

Ethiopia’s government has dealt a fresh setback to independent journalism by permanently suspending two Deutsche Welle (DW) correspondents, intensifying concerns over press restrictions. Deutsche Welle, Germany’s public international broadcaster, announced on December 12 that the Ethiopian Media Authority—a government body regulating news outlets—had imposed the suspensions. Initially, on October 23, the authority temporarily halted all journalistic activities by nine DW Ethiopia-based reporters. The incident underscores escalating threats to the independent press amid Ethiopia’s regional conflicts and political tensions. Critics argue such actions stifle reporting on sensitive issues, eroding media freedom in a country already ranked low on global press indices.

Dhaka: Ethiopia has announced plans to construct what will become Africa’s largest airport, a £7.4 billion project located near Bishoftu, southeast of the capital Addis Ababa. The ambitious development aims to transform the country’s aviation infrastructure and further cement Ethiopia’s position as a leading aviation hub on the continent. The new airport will feature four runways and is designed to accommodate up to 100 million passengers annually, a significant increase compared with the current capacity at Bole International Airport. “This project reflects Ethiopia’s commitment to developing world-class aviation infrastructure and enhancing connectivity across Africa and beyond,” said a spokesperson for Ethiopian Airlines. It is also expected to increase the competitiveness of Ethiopian Airlines, which has steadily expanded its long-haul and cargo operations in recent years.
