The inquiry concluded that there was no accident involved and then said ‘the cause of death was complications of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease’ and there were no reasonable precautions that could have been taken to prevent the death. At the time of his death he was subject to mandatory two hour checks by carers who were accompanied by prison officers due to his ill health. McCafferty worked for Celtic after joining in 1990 and became a kitman for the youth team in 1994, where he remained until 1996 until he resigned amid allegations about his behaviour. Eva OsborneNine per cent of drivers observed on Irish roads were using a mobile device while driving, according to a new qualitative study on driver mobile phone use in Ireland. The Road Safety Authority (RSA) hosted its Annual International Road Safety Conference in Dublin Castle on Wednesday with the theme of 'Driver Distraction'. Dr Sarma indicated that the ‘fear of missing out (FOMO)’ on messages, calls and notifications while driving is a significant motivation behind this behaviour. He found that the use of phones while driving stems from planned behaviour and automatic behaviour. Planned behaviour sees drivers deliberately using their phones with beliefs like: "I believe I can handle the car safely while using the phone", "I won't get caught", and that others use their phones all the time.

Meanwhile, Fine Gael blindsided its coalition partner Fianna Fáil by seeking Dáil statements from Ms McDonald on her handling of a child sex abuser in her party. McMonagle was arrested in August 2021 following an investigation into child sex offences. Sinn Féin dropped the ball on this. After the interview, Ms McDonald came under fire in the Dáil from Ms Naughton and was forced to again defend her handling of the controversy. Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrímsson says he’s keen to rip some long-established traditions with the Irish team to try and lift the Republic out of what he admits is a “downward spiral”. Having started the Nations League campaign with back-to-back home defeats, without a goal scored, Ireland are in Helsinki, to face another struggling nation, Finland, on Thursday night. "I wouldn’t say a losing streak, but if you are in a downward spiral it’s good to do something different in a different country, a different environment, shake things up. "That would be my preference of doing it this way – I think travelling is one thing. "I feel better this camp but that's mainly what we have been doing – we had maybe five meetings, we are doing more talking than training,” he said.

Photograph: iStockCompanies are making it harder for trade unions to organise or represent their workers, a new report suggests, and are using tactics such as refusing officials physical access to workplaces, monitoring employee communications and victimising activists to weaken union activity. The research, which is to be launched on Wednesday at an event in Dublin, includes a survey of trade union officials regarding their experience of attempting to organise and represent members in Irish workplaces. The directive requires governments to promote collective bargaining in countries where coverage falls below 80 per cent. “The best way to make work pay is by promoting and supporting collective bargaining, said Irish Congress of Trade Unions, general secretary, Owen Reidy. It is unacceptable that hundreds of thousands of workers across the State are still denied access to unions and collective bargaining.”

30 years of World Meeting of FamiliesThe Church marks 30 years since the first World Meeting of Families with a mini-documentary celebrating the gatherings under three Popes and looking forward to the next event in 2028. Oct 09, 2024By Francesca MerloThirty years ago, on the 8th of October 1994, Saint John Paul II invited families from around the world to gather in Rome for the first-ever World Meeting of Families. The statement reads that the documentary serves as a valuable pastoral tool, suitable for marriage preparation, family catechesis, and more. These videos aim to inspire families as the Church looks ahead to the next World Meeting in 2028. From the first meeting in Rome to Pope Francis’ post-pandemic multicenter gathering in 2022, these events continue to remind families of the beauty of living with Christ at the center of their lives.--Vatican News

“We really are having the best time out there,” Kildunne said. “I think the best rugby comes when you’re happy. “We can’t ever expect to win - no one thought Ireland would beat New Zealand and they did - it’s rugby and anything can happen. She added: “Canada are a very physical, very fast team who have posed a lot of challenges for us in the past. “I think it’s important to learn from both of the games we’ve had and take each game as a new one.

Irish state-owned utility ESB won the rights to develop a 100-MW floating offshore wind in last year's Crown Estate leasing round. Malin Sea Wind will lie approximately 14 miles southeast of Islay and 15 miles north of Portrush on the north coast of the province. It aims to be operational in 2031 and will ultimately deliver 100MW of floating offshore wind capacity and be capable of powering 95,000 homes. “I am profoundly concerned by the proposed wind farm development off the coast between Northern Ireland and Scotland being advanced by the Scottish Government. “All offshore wind projects are subject to robust consent processes that include public consultations, with further assessments and potential mitigations considered before decisions are made.
