Browne’s focus on ending Westmeath wait for Leinster titleOn a personal level, next Sunday’s Leinster intermediate ladies football final will carry special significance for Westmeath manager Frank Browne as he tries to plot the downfall of his native Wexford. But Browne’s current sporting focus is fully on the Westmeath ladies football team as they prepare to face the Slaneysiders in Sunday’s TG4 Leinster Intermediate Championship final in Portlaoise (throw-in 5.30pm). Sunday’s game will be a different affair with a Leinster title at stake. “Of course we’ve looked at the draw but all our focus at the moment is on the Leinster final. Westmeath haven’t won a Leinster final in 13 years so that’s a fairly long time to be waiting,” said Browne.

The Foreign Secretary is due to meet European Commission vice-president Maros Sefcovic, Spanish foreign minister Jose Manuel Albares and Gibraltar chief minister Fabian Picardo for a second round of discussions about the territory’s relationship with the EU. The nature of that relationship remains unresolved following Brexit, with rules governing Gibraltar’s border with Spain understood to be a major sticking point. Sir Bill Cash, a Eurosceptic Conservative MP and chairman of the Commons European Scrutiny Committee, warned last week that negotiations over Gibraltar risked becoming “Northern Ireland Protocol 2.0”. The Foreign Office has previously said the UK remains steadfast in support for Gibraltar and will not agree to anything that compromises sovereignty. The Foreign Secretary’s visit comes against the backdrop of continued concerns about the EU’s influence in Northern Ireland.

The Tánaiste said that the ITIP with NATO presented opportunities for future cooperation in areas like cyber, resilience and maritime situational awareness. “The European Union defence industry is the most fragmented, and militaries are the most fragmented. [1]In March, the European Commission presented the first-ever European Defence Industrial Strategy, in which the EU set out a target that Member States should procure at least 40% of their defence equipment in a collaborative manner by 2030. Martin went on to refer to ways in which Ireland is looking to expand and improve its military capabilities, pointing to the acquisition of radar technology as one area where cooperation may be beneficial. “We’re looking at radar now for example, and we may very well look from a government-to-government perspective on that,” the Tánaiste said.

I’ve noticed that in neighbourhood restaurants, even if there are small plates, there is generally a safety net for ordering three courses. The reality is closer to starters and main course, with a bit of sharing potential on the small plates course.
