Primeline announces 400 new jobs for MeathPrimeline Distribution in Co Meath has announced the addition of 400 new jobs for the county. The roles are part of a €50 million investment in a new hub in Ashbourne. The jobs will be across a range of areas and will bring Primeline's total workforce to over 1,500. Measles alert for passengers who were on flight to Dublin from Turkey
An alert has been issued to passengers who were travelling on a flight to Dublin after a person on board was subsequently found to have measles. The warning is for people who were on flight TK1977 from Istanbul to Dublin on May 6, the Monday of the May bank holiday. The risk is posed to passengers who have not had measles or received the measles vaccine. Passengers need to be alert for symptoms that may arise until the end of the monitoring period on Tuesday, May 28. It comes as figures show that 26 cases of measles have been confirmed so far this year.

The Calangute Police registered a case under Section 381 and began investigations. During the course of investigations, it was revealed that the accused person is in West Bengal. A team of Calangute Police proceeded to West Bengal and traced the accused person at Panitara village in Dakshin Dinajpur, West Bengal, and recovered part of stolen property i.e. three gold biscuits weighing 300 gms worth Rs 25 lakh.

Confidence in Executive shaken when schools in Ireland closed in 2020 – O’Neill
Stormont followed advice from the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) which changed to recommend the closure of schools later in March. Giving evidence to the inquiry sitting in Belfast on Tuesday, Ms O’Neill said she was baffled that their advice around schools could be so different on either sides of the border. “We live in a small island, two jurisdictions back to back, and particularly in relation to the issue of schools closure. “In 24 hours, a lot had changed … we had lost the wider public, they were taking the children out of schools. “In that 24 hours we were actually committing to remove the children from schools, schools were shutting down, even education authorities like CCMS (Council for Catholic Maintained Schools) were telling schools to close.”

Remembering Mary Banotti
Sir, – Hearing of the death of Mary Banotti reminded me of a morning walking the streets of Dublin with her a lifetime ago (“‘Trailblazer’ former Fine Gael MEP Mary Banotti has died”, News, May 11th). We met very early in the morning, wearing sensible shoes, knowing what lay ahead. We were both nurses and she wanted to see how we were working with homeless people and how she could help us. We visited the many hospital casualty departments, the hostels, night-shelters, day centres and met people from all sections of the community en route. We met homeless people going to work in the gardens of better-off people, and some going to court where the judge was on first-name terms with them.

Ukrainian refugees to have welfare allowances cut in coming weeksUpdated: 11am. Payments to Ukrainian refugees are set to be cut within 12 weeks. The provision of State accommodation has already been limited, and these latest measures will see 12 weeks' notice given to those who'll be affected by the changes. Under the revised plan, Ukrainian refugees go to designated accommodation centres for up to 90 days and are provided with food, laundry and integration support during this time. Arrivals had previously been entitled to a jobseeker’s allowance of €220 per week and unlimited time in State accommodation.

Virgin Money UK warns of pressure on profits ahead of Nationwide takeover
Virgin Money UK expects profitability to come under pressure in the second half of 2024, reflecting higher costs and investments. Boss David Duffy said: 'Over the first six months, we have continued to deliver on our strategic ambitions in line with expectations. Shareholders will vote on the Nationwide takeover on 22 May, ahead of the publication of VMUK's interim results on 13 June. Controversially, however, Nationwide members will not get a vote on the takeover. VMUK, however, still expects to pay a 2024 full-year dividend of 2p per share as announced by its board.
