So the simple answer is that we put the leap day at the end of February because the Romans did. On a leap day, they added a second sixth kalends of March, which they called the “bissextile day”, that is the second sixth day. In older writings of various kinds, you will still see people call the leap day, February 29, the bissextile day. This practice of adding a leap day in February continued into the Middle Ages and was taught in monastic classrooms. At any point, the leap day could have been changed to something that made more sense in a modern calendar.

February 29, the rare and elusive Leap Day, has once again graced our calendars, appearing only once every four years, and sometimes carrying with it a sense of the auspicious. But what is the significance of Leap Day? Unfortunately, the Julian calendar was still out by 11 minutes and 14 seconds. Despite its cosmic precision, Leap Day is not just a celestial event; it is a global spectacle marked by various cultural beliefs. In parts of China, Leap Days are considered bad luck for the elderly.

His appointment on a temporary basis gives the FAI more time to complete its search for a permanent successor to Stephen Kenny, who left the role in November. “I’m delighted to return to the senior men’s coaching staff as interim head coach for the two international friendlies against Belgium and Switzerland,” O’Shea said. “It will be an incredible honour to lead the side into the March international window. Crystal Palace coach Paddy McCarthy will assist John O’Shea (John Walton/PA)“I’ve got great belief in this group of players to win football matches and I’m looking forward to some positive results.”Former Wales boss Chris Coleman and England Under-21s coach Lee Carsley have been among those linked with the vacant Republic post. “John knows this group of players extremely well and with the support and expertise of Paddy, we believe this team are the right choice for the interim period.”

'It doesn't have to be pretty'When it comes to the target of securing promotion from Division Three, Westmeath manager Dessie Dolan isn’t worried if his team’s style of play isn’t overly appealing to purists. “It doesn’t have to be pretty. I suppose if you think of Limerick coming up here, they’ve lost three games and they had nothing to lose. “We had a little bit of figuring out to do at half-time, but in fairness to the group I think they’re showing maturity insofar as that they’re able to process the information and figure out a way. “That’s the good thing about the team, they’re able to adapt and they’re able to learn.

Aer Lingus has told An Bord Pleanála that the planned €40 million Ryanair maintenance facility for Dublin Airport 'will have fundamental impacts on Aer Lingus’s ability to carry out their daily operations'. Planning consultant for Aer Lingus, Kevin Hughes, told An Bord Pleanála that Aer Lingus was not against Ryanair’s plan to construct a new hangar within Dublin Airport. Aer Lingus required leave to appeal after not lodging a third-party submission with Fingal County Council. In the appeal, Mr Hughes of Hughes Planning and Development Consultants (HPDC) had told the appeals board that the location and configuration of the proposed hangar would impact on the ability of Aer Lingus to carry out its daily operations at the nearby Hangar 6. The planning consultant said that Aer Lingus was “concerned regarding weaknesses in the information that was submitted at application stage”.

Roscommon Municipal District councillors have called for major changes to a new Castlerea traffic safety scheme, claiming that the current plan will lead to a substantial loss of existing car-parking spaces in the town and have a detrimental impact on local businesses and residents. The traffic scheme proposals involve the installation of two signal-controlled traffic lights at the Main Street/St. Patrick Street junction – known locally as Delaney’s corner - and the Main Street/Boyle Road (R361) junction. The plans also involved the upgrade of existing pedestrian crossings on Main Street and St. Patrick Street, and the installation of two new pedestrian crossings on Main Street. The changes proposed will see the retention of up to 20 car-parking spaces on Main Street and Patrick Street which would have to make way under the current scheme.

Greystones Presbyterian in Co Wicklow is one congregation that has developed links with local churches and the community by having a float in the town’s St Patrick’s Day parade. This month, Alex Drew from Faith in Later Life, writes about the value of older people in our churches. The ‘Age of Opportunity’ morning is designed to help unlock the potential for age specific ministry and evangelism among those in later life (details on p21). Although March always celebrates St Patrick, this year, the more significant event of the month is Easter. The Presbyterian Herald is the official magazine of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.

‘Emotional’ discussion to honour 1,300 people in St Loman’s gravesPrevious Next Image 1 of 5 Julie Clarke, whose grandmother Julia was buried at St Loman’s, with Niall ‘Bressie’ Breslin, who is doing a PhD on the Irish psychiatric system with Trinity College. Image 2 of 5 Sheila Shanley, Kathy Crinion and Jacqui Wiley at the event which aimed to honour 1,300 unmarked graves at St Loman’s Hospital, at the Annebrook House Hotel on Sunday February 18. An “emotional and proactive” discussion was held last weekend on how to honour the 1,300 former patients buried in unmarked graves on the grounds of St Loman’s Hospital. Burials took place at St Loman’s Hospital between 1907 and 1970, and crosses with numbers identified individual graves, as opposed to people’s names. Bressie told the 30-odd attendees at the event how he has “tried to run away from the memory of St Loman’s” for all of his life.

Ms Ní Raghallaigh said she was not happy at the prospect of being called to another meeting that week. At about 7.10pm the secretary general rang Ms Ní Raghallaigh and said a letter was important as well as a further meeting. Ms Ní Raghallaigh had indicated she might resign if she had received a letter, Ms Martin said. The former secretary general Katherine Licken and former chair Siún Ní Raghallaigh are to be invited to appear before the committee. That is in relation to the most obvious opening question – did you not expect to be asked if you had confidence in Siún Ní Raghallaigh?
