Man in his 60's killed in local road accidentA man in his 60's was pronounced dead at the scene following a single car collision on the L2015 at New Road in Clara this morning (Monday.) The coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged. Shortly after 8.50am this morning, Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the single car collision and are now appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam), and were travelling in the area at the time, are urged to make this footage available to Gardaí. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Tullamore Garda Station on 057 932 7600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

A police operation is in its third day in Dungiven after the device was made safe and removed on Sunday. Police on Monday morning arrested three men, aged 22, 35 and 55, following a number of searches in Omagh and Derry. “Following these searches, three men, aged 55, 22 and 35, were arrested in connection with terrorism-related offences,” a police spokesperson said. Our detectives have today made three arrests in relation to a security alert in the Dungiven area.

As the organisation, Muslim Hands says: "Ramadan is a month of fasting and abstaining from things considered to be impure for the mind and body. The date for Ramadan changes every year as the Islamic calendar follows the phases of the moon, known as the lunar cycle. It marks not only the end of fasting but sees Muslims thank Allah for giving them strength during the month.

Last week, two young men died in a crash in Limerick — while a 19-year-old man died in a separate incident in Sligo. Earlier this month, a 15-year-old girl died in a road crash in Tipperary while. On January 31, two men in their 20s and a teenage girl died in a road crash in Carlow. According to research from the Road Safety Authority, the highest risk age among those travelling on Irish roads in 2023 was the 16-25 age group. However, when the sporting star is being lauded for being “world class” in the same breath as an insinuation that all is not well, the intrigue grows.

More money will be provided to Cork County Council to fix roads badly damaged during Storm Babet, the Taoiseach has said. East Cork bore the brunt of infrastructural damage during Storm Babet last October, with Midleton devastated. Cork County Council has done some emergency repairs to reopen key roads but others are still in shocking conditions. Council chief executive Valerie O’Sullivan welcomed the overall allocation but said the amount for storm damage repairs was nowhere near enough. Leo Varadkar observes the damage to a local business on Main Street in Midleton, Co Cork, after Storm Babet last October.

Northern Ireland Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd said the capital investment is “vital”. “I am now in a position to announce an additional £8.1 million of funding for my department’s structural maintenance programme to deliver additional resurfacing schemes and continue to address the poor condition of our road network. “This investment has been made possible through a combination of additional funding from the Executive supplemented by a reallocation within my department. “Work will start immediately on the planning and delivery of these new schemes.”

National What would happen without a Leap Day? In the past 500 years, there was no leap day in 1700, 1800 and 1900, but 2000 had one. In the next 500 years, if the practice is followed, there will be no leap day in 2100, 2200, 2300 and 2500. WHAT WOULD HAPPEN WITHOUT A LEAP DAY? Being born in a leap year on a leap day certainly is a talking point.

Funding of €21m has been allocated for improving and maintaining the county’s regional and local roads in 2024. The funding was announced by Transport Minister Eamon Ryan as part of an investment programme of €658m for the country’s regional and local roads in 2024. In Roscommon, €11.95m will go towards restoration improvement, €3.16m has been provided for discretionary grants while more than €1.63m will be spent on restoration maintenance. "This investment will allow us to repair, strengthen and maintain our roads across the region, ensuring they are fit for purpose. These roads are imperative for children getting to school and people getting to work safely,” said the Senator.
